115: Lines - modifying pedal lines

Sibelius supports pedal lines that play back; in some cases, it may be preferable to use pedal markings (of the form Ped. followed by * to mark where the pedal should be lifted).
In Sibelius 3 (and later) there is a line in the Create > Lines dialog (press L to access this) which plays back correctly.
In Sibelius versions 2 and 1 these markings do not play back by default, but can be made to, as follows:

  • In Sibelius 2: choose House Style > Edit Lines; or
  • In Sibelius 1.x: choose Create > Lines
  • Choose the pedal line and click New to make a new line based on this style
  • Give it an appropriate name
  • Change the End settings so that Sibelius inserts a * character rather than the hook
  • To remove the horizontal line, set its style to dashed, set the Dash to 0 (zero) spaces, and set the gap to 999 spaces
  • Adjust the offset of the start symbol (Ped.) to 0.1 spaces right to cover up the little bit of dashed line before the very long gap
  • Click OK to finish creating your line.

You can then subsequently use this 'line' in that score (to use it in other scores, use House Style > Export House Style (File > Export styles in Sibelius 1.x) and then import that style file into other scores.)
