11: Dynamics and pedal markings - applying to both staves of a keyboard instrument

When writing for keyboard instruments (such as the piano) it is usual for dynamics to be entered between the two staves.

In Sibelius 3 and later, dynamics and pedal markings apply to both staves of a keyboard instrument anyway (if both staves are on the same midi channel). However, before Sibelius 3 this was not the case - therefore if you haven't already, upgrade to the latest version of Sibelius, or read below for previous versions.

Because dynamics are objects, and each object can only be attached to a single staff, a single dynamic marking entered between the two keyboard staves will only apply to the staff to which it is attached, i.e. either the right- or left-hand staff, but not both.

Sibelius 2 includes the Copy Dynamics plug-in, which automatically copies all expression text and hairpin from either keyboard staff to the other, hiding the copies so the score looks uncluttered. If you don't yet have Sibelius 2, get an upgrade.

Sibelius 1.4 (still available as a free upgrade) includes the Copy Text plug-in that automatically copies dynamic markings so that they apply to both staves. However, this plug-in does not copy hairpins, and hairpins cannot be hidden in Sibelius 1.4.

Pedal markings automatically apply to both hands of a keyboard instrument, provided both staves are set to use the same MIDI channel in the Mixer window in Sibelius 2 (Sounds dialog in Sibelius 1.4).
