Student composer winners announced!
Sibelius and Ensemble Offspring are thrilled to announce the winners and runners-up for the secondary and tertiary categories of the Sibelius Composer Awards 2008. Once again, the Awards were a huge success and attracted entries from secondary and tertiary students throughout Australia. The superb works submitted by the 2 winners and 3 runners-up and a very high standard of entries overall are testimony to a wealth of young musical talent in Australia.
Secondary
Jackson Sweeney (Balwyn High School, Victoria) has taken out first prize with his composition, 'Delusional Mind'. Described by Damien Ricketson as "a very sophisticated work for someone so young", the piece incorporated "an excellent sense of pacing, drama and textural variation".
Liam Kemp (Belconnen High School, ACT) and Liane Papantoniou (MLC School Burwood, NSW) tied for runnerup with 'Control' and 'SynchroniCity' respectively.
Tertiary
Jesse McVeity (Victorian College of the Arts) was awarded first prize in the tertiary category for his composition, 'Luminous Patterns'. Described by Damian Barbeler as "A superbly complex piece born of simple construction: which is the best kind".
Chie Tsang Lee (The University of Western Australia) was runner-up with his composition 'Autumns' Rain Fall'.

The Sibelius Composer Awards finalists with members of Ensemble Offspring
Winner of Composer Commission announced!
Sibelius and Ensemble Offspring are thrilled to announce Sydney composer Peter McNamara as the recipient of the inaugural Sibelius Emerging Composer Commission. McNamara clearly stood out in a competitive field of applicants for his striking use of instrumental colour and tightly wrought melodic lines. In addition to a suite of music technology products provided by Sibelius his award includes a commission fee to write a new work for Ensemble Offspring to be premiered at the 2008 Sibelius Composer Awards Concert on October 26.
Prizes & Opportunities
- Winners and finalists will receive incredible prizes comprising cash, opportunities and music technology products from leading Avid Audio brands Sibelius, Digidesign and M-Audio.
- The finalists’ works will be performed by Ensemble Offspring in a public performance broadcast on ABC Classic FM.
