Inputting dynamics
Posted by Andy Thorne - 27 Apr 08:50AM
Sometime ago an update made it possible to enter dynamics by typing Ctrl+E (release) and then enter the dynamic. The correct font would appear. No this does not work anymore. Why? Thanks

This has been the shortcut for dynamics since forever. However, you need to keep [ctrl] pressed while you type the dynamic letters (mpfs etc]. You can also type [ctrl][shift]c to put cresc., and [ctrl][shift]d to put dim.

Again, this has been the shortcut since they year dot. Not keeping [ctrl] pressed will not give you the music font letters for dynamics.

OK, thanks Mike. I was sure they changed it at one point so that you didn't have to hold down the key once you pressed them. My memory problem!!

You are correct that a few versions back Sibelius stopped requiring Ctrl to be held while typing dynamics. Maybe @Mike Lyons is still using an older version?

Perhaps you are being confused by the fact that the correct font doesn't appear while typing. It is only rendered after leaving input mode.

I'm using the very latest version, thank you Laurence, 2024.3.1. Is this 'feature' designed for lazy arses who can't be bothered to hold a key down for a second or two?

Dumbing down again!

:-)

More a matter of 'how it should have been in the first place' perhaps? Are there any other text styles where, having selected the style it also takes a modifier key to actually GET that style?

Holding Ctrl still works though!

I'm a little puzzled by this. I'm using SU 2024.3.1, and when I type in dynamics, I press Command (I'm on a Mac)-E, release it, type in the dynamic (which does appear in the correct font while I'm typing), then press escape to leave input mode. I've been using Sibelius for years (I'm not sure how many), and this is the way it's been as long as I can remember. ???

Maybe it's different on Mac. For me on PC if I press Ctrl-E, release, then type f, I see normal-weight characters. Press Esc, if the characters parse to a standard dynamics marking, they render as bold italic. So f, ff and fff go bold, ffff doesn't. If I want ffff as a dynamic I must hold Ctrl while typing. It parses sfz correctly, but not fz. Quite clever, really!

Or I can use the old method of holding Ctrl if I want bold-italic, not if I don't.

The option to not need to keep holding ctrl down while entering dynamics text recognizes whether you are typing specific letters Sibelius wants to treat as dynamics.

Just press ctrl_e and let go of both keys and start typing.

"New Features and Improvements in Sibelius 2022.10

Sibelius 2022.10 provides the following new features, changes, and improvements:

• Make Into Part command (Sibelius Ultimate only)
• Improved dynamics text entry with p, m, f, and so on are now automatically converted to the current music font style"

**************************************

You can still keep holding down the ctrl key while entering dynamics as you always did. My impressing was that a large number of users did not enter dynamics with the correct appearance, so this "shortcut" was added in Sib Ultimate 2022.10.

Yes there was a scourge of dynamics written in regular italics fonts, which is very much not correct. So now users will have a helping hand there. If it truly bothers you, there's a preference to turn it off, if memory serves.

I can't find the preference if there is one, looking in File >Preferences and the Text pane and Engraving Rules. Can you tell me where I can find it, just so I know?

z (as in sfz) is dodgy. If you hit z on its own, you get the wrong font. If you hit [ctrl]z the whole string gets deleted. So it has to be [ctrl][alt][shft]z, or get it from the word menu.

Actually, typing 'sfz' DOES work, with a result identical to getting it from the menu. It's 'fz' that causes a problem. Quickest method is probably to enter 'sfz' then edit out the 's'.

I'm not surprised, Andy. Just been googling. Seems that sf can mean subito forte as well as sforzando.

sf does *NOT* mean subito forte. That's an error.

So I believe, Justin, tho' (it seems) some composers think otherwise.
