Sib. 7.5: DS al Coda
Posted by Sibelius - 24 Apr 08:51AM
How do I put in D.S al Coda so that it will appear in all the parts. See the enclosed score bar 63.

Please follow precisely the instructions in the Sibelius Reference, section "6.9 Repeats". Nothing else will do.

The score attached above uses incorrect Text Styles for "D.S al coda", and uses the Segno and Coda symbols incorrectly.

Don't use the coda symbol as part of the 'To Coda' instruction. Playback will jump to THAT coda symbol, effectively just carrying straight on. Similarly, don't use the segno symbol at the 'DS al coda' instruction, it will just jump to THAT segno symbol.

Also, use a System Text style for jump instructions. The obvious choice is Repeats Text, its R-click palette contains the instructions you'll need. Your 'DS al coda' was in Plain Text. It won't work, and it won't appear in all Parts.

Corrected version attached.

OK. Can you please explain me about System Text and Repeats Text. I can't find anything about it. Else, it's not so important for me about playback. It's just for printing. At last; as you can see in the guitar part of the enclosed score, I have used obligue lines ( I don't remember how I did it) When I try to copy that to the piano part, the lines are coming lower down.

It is usual to place rhythm slashes (notehead type 3) on the centre line. Once you have positioned the first one correctly it can be repeated for as long as necessary. I see that those in your guitar part are all a 2nd too high. Once you have righted this, you can shift-select a single slash or range of slashes including chord symbols, then copy-paste them to the piano. The slashes will remain on the centre line regardless of clef or transposition of the destination staff.

Please see the Sibelius Reference, section "6.9 Repeats", sub-sections:
- Codas
- Dal segno (D.S.) and da capo (D.C.)
- Creating a segno
- Fine and To Coda

This forum does not accept Word documents as attachments. The only attachments that work are files of type .sib or .png.

If playback doesn't matter, I suggest you DO use the Segno and Coda symbols as well as text at the jump points. And make them nice and big! It will break Sibelius playback, but so what? Unfortunately Repeat instructions don't respond to being turned off in Play on Pass. This really should be fixed.

In this particular case, where the guitar part has nothing but slashes, you can move them all down at once. Triple-click in the stave then hit DownArrow a couple of times.

Text Styles in Sibelius come in two flavours. Staff text is attached to an individual staff and appears in only that instrument's part. System Text appears in every instrument's part, and in selected staves in the full score.

Do you really want your guitar to just chunk along, 4 to the bar, throughout? There are some pretty specific tutti rhythms in this piece!

To Adrian: I have now lowered the rythm-slashes in the guitar part one 2nd and tried to copy it to the piano part, but it gets even lower. See enclosed score.

How are you managing to do that!? When I select a passage of the Guitar stave, Ctrl-C then Ctrl-V into the piano stave the slashes come out centred. What are you doing?

I think that I did just what you said; Took the slashes down one 2nd in the guitar part, and then Ctrl C and Ctrl V in the piano part. Maybe I can solve it in another way. How do I write the rythm- slashes in a part?

Same here. And same with passage select (shift-klik) the source and alt-klik the destination. It works between any two instruments regardless of clef or transposition (guitar to alto, guitar to tenor, guitar to bari, guitar to tpt, guitar to tbn, even alto to tenor). Slashes (notehead 3) centre every time.

Back to my problem with D.S. al Coda. I can see the following in Sibelius Reference:
Choose Repeat (D.C./D.S./To Coda) from the Tempo category in Text > Styles > Style. (It’s
important to use this text style rather than Tempo because it automatically attaches to the end of
the bar.)
* A flashing caret appears. Now right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) to see the word
menu, which includes the text you need – enter it in the score simply by clicking it in the menu.
I can't see any "Tempo", but I'm clicking at the small arrow in the right down corner, and then a window comes up with "Repeat (D.C./D.S./To Coda)", but nothing is happening and I don't see any flashing caret.

I think you are clicking the little arrow at bottom right, which leads to the Text Styles Editor. You want the one centered above it, which will open the Gallery of text styles. See attached screen shot.

I agree that a large label of 'To Coda' and a very small one of 'Repeat (...To Coda)' is idiotic. Maybe one day the Galleries will get an overhaul.

You also still have the option of accessing Text Styles in the Sibelius 6 way, by R-clicking on a blank part of the score page.

I note that in your latest version you have laboriously entered the 'DS al coda' in Plain Staff Text on each stave individually. However you managed to enter 'To coda' and 'Coda' correctly.

I think you used to post here as 'Ole Bollom'? No problem with using a different name if you want to, but was 'Sibelius' a helpful choice?

Thank you for the answers. I have now managed to put in a To Coda in bar 57, but I still haven't found out how to put a D.S. al Coda in bar 63.
Someone has written:
"Choose Repeat (D.C./D.S./To Coda) from the Tempo category in Text > Styles > Style. (It’s
important to use this text style rather than Tempo because it automatically attaches to the end of
the bar.)", but I don't understand "The Tempo category". I can't that .

See attached screen-shot, showing the "Text Styles" Gallery, the "Tempo" category within the Gallery, and the "Repeat" Text Style within the "Tempo" category.
