Sib. 7.5: Playback of hairpins
Posted by Paul Spanton - 22 Apr 02:34PM
Is there a 'trick' to getting Sibelius to read and playback hairpins? Do I need to put the notes in first? Last? I have specified the starting dynamic and the ending but it does not playback the diminuendo (in this case) at all. Not very helpful for rehearsal files for my choir.

Playback of hairpins is automatic.

For assistance with playback problems, please attach a Sibelius .sib score file that demonstrates the problem, and tell us where in the score the problem occurs.

This one? I get no impression of any diminuendo on playback.

If you temporarily disable Magnetic Layout (on ribbon tab Layout), you will see that the hairpin is too long, and stretches past the pp dynamic. Therefore, the pp dynamic is not seen as the finishing dynamic for the hairpin.

It is necessary that the attachment point of the ending dynamic mark occurs AFTER the end-point time of the hairpin, as viewed without the application of Magnetic Layout (which shortens the visible appearance of the hairpin, but not the end-point time of the hairpin).

Your score plays correctly if the end-point time of the hairpin occurs before the attachment point of the ending dynamic mark.

Wow! I've used Sibelius for nearly 15 years and didn't know that. I assumed that Magnetic Layout changed the effective end of the hairpin. That explains why hairpins haven't worked correctly. Sheesh!
