"cresc." with large dashed line attached
Posted by Adriano Baumann - 28 Mar 02:41AM (edited 28 Mar 07:20AM)
Hi everybody :-)

Is it possible to create an extendable/flexible:

cresc. - - - - - -

similar to rit. - - - - ?

In many older scores I have to edit this occurs and this feature would be very practical...

"cresc." followed by a separately placed dashed line is too unstable.

Thanks for your help

The cres line can be made as long as you wish. Either select a passage before creating the line or create on a single system and pull the right grab handle to where you need it.

'cresc _ _ _' is (rather strangely) not supplied, so you'll need to create it in the Line Editor, based on one of the existing line types. The supplied 'rit _ _ _' etc. lines are all System Lines, and have 'baked in' behaviours, i.e. even if you edited 'rit _ _ _' to read 'cresc _ _ _' it would still appear in every Part and still cause a slow-down. So it's best to start from 'Dashed line' in the Staff Line section. These settings (attached) should be suitable. Remember to save a House Style or Manuscript Paper so as to have it available in future scores. Or you can Copy/Paste into an existing score, if Import House Style is too blunt a tool. Hi Adrian, and thanks
I actually know how to handle separate dotted lines...
My problem is that I need such a line fixed to "cresc." (or "dim.")
I will follow Laurence Payne's instructions - to whom I also thanking very much :-)

Possibly Adrian assumed there WAS already a 'cresc line' in the Lines menu. It's a reasonable assumption!

Hi Laurence again :-)
It works; thanks again.
I've created the new text as an "expression" feature, in order to have it in italics.
However, when you want to insert it, it still doesn't start in the required system region, but in the score's upper "tempo" area, so one has always to "Alt" copy and drag the copy into the following areas. My sore has 24 staves - so I hope, once I extract the instrumental parts, that all dotted "cresc." will be in their proper places :-)
I agree with you that, unfortunately, this text option (including its "dim." alternative) is still not being supplied. I am already in contact with Sam Butler on this subject.

Your custom Line will appear in the list on the Design and Position page, where you can change its default position to beneath the stave. Maybe match the settings for 'crescendo' (hairpins).

Hi Laurence again
This does not well in m case, since the score is too complicated and graphically uneven.
I am glad this dotted line is required only once in here - and I have to take over the composer's original notation.
I have to adapt the cresc. line manually in every staff region, so it cannot be universally fixed.
Still, I am quite happy like this!

Well, the delusion came today, as I re-opened the score.
All manually set "cresc. - - - - - - " had changed their places and jumped into the middle of the staffs or even quite far away. The horizontal positions had also moved.
I did not change the generally paged score layout positions and never returned back to work in the panorama layout.
I (re-) create this score following a previous print-out which survived after the old Sibelius files had gone lost.
In other words, this "cresc. -----" cannot created as a vertically attached positioned "line", with variable distances from each separate staff. But I will continue trying...
By dragging these lines one also cannot see in transparency if it is in the correct lower area of its corresponding staff or not already in the following staff's.
