Renew Ultimate perpetual plan
Posted by tubaman100 - 29 Nov 12:16AM
Sorry if this has been answered before: My perpetual license for Sibelius Ultimate expires in about a month. If sometime BEFORE the expiration date, I pay for an additional 3 years, does the new 3-year expiration clock start from the time I pay for the renewal, or does it start from the date my current plan expires?

Thanks!

It should start from the date your current plan expires, i.e., you are not losing out by renewing early. Someone at Avid correct me if I am wrong.

I just did this and my new expiration date is three years after my old expiration date. Subsequently I turned off annual renewal since paying for three years turned it on.

I'm confused. How is it possible for a perpetual licence to expire? Surely that's a contradiction.

Perpetuity. Remember when your high school girlfriend told you she'd love you forever? How'd that work out?

Avid wants to be paid. Perpetually. Gotta cough up to keep up.

The OP used slightly imprecise language. The "perpetual license" is not what's being upgraded, it's the Support and Update plan, which is included with any perpetual license. This allows you to use new versions during the life of the plan, and access customer support. They are sold in 1-year or 3-year blocks.

And to add to Justin's post, if you decide to not renew your support and update plan you'll continue to be able to use Sibelius, but that is the version as of the moment that your plan expired.

If at any point you want to upgrade you'll have to renew or reinstate the plan which generally is much more expensive than paying the 3 year renewal.

At the moment you can upgrade an expired license (from Sibelius 6 or later only, as far as I can tell) for $149, which is a good deal. That price was not available for a while, and the most reasonable option had been to go on a true subscription. Who knows how long the $149 upgrade will last, but it is here now.

At this price, the upgrade process is comparable to what is was "in the old days". You could buy a copy and get a few free upgrades, but at every major upgrade you would pay $150 or so to go from any previous version to the current version.

So even if you do not pay to continue for the service and upgrade package (at $99/year) you still get to use the version that was active when your update package expires, which is exactly what would have happened in Sib 5, 6, or 7.

If you want to always keep current, the $99 /year update is a good deal, but if you skip a year or 2 and the $149 offer is still available, it is pretty much no big deal to get back on later.

But, and this is a big but, if Avid goes back to the policy where in order to update, you either need to switch to a subscription or buy a perpetual license at full price ($600)
then staying up to date on your support plan will be a significant benefit.
