Is it possible to filter all notes without articulations in Sibelius.
I know how to filter notes if they have stacc., accent, etc.
But is it possible to filter any notes without articulations?
I have a Photoscore score which has tenuto missing from most notes. Other articulation is there, so instead of entering each tenuto separately, I though of filtering all notes without it and then globally entering it in one hit..
I don't think this is possible in advanced filter. In my version (22.9), there are three check boxes with no articulation shown. Checking any or all three of these boxes has no results. See picture.
Joachim's picture is set to deselect all notes with tenuto marks. Dima needs to select all notes without articulation.
Choose "All selected required", then (for the mentioned case) check only the box for the tenuto, not the three empty (respectively custom) articulations.
Sorry, Joachim, your procedure does not work. Dima's score has no tenutos to be deselected. Your procedure selects everything articulated and non-articulated.
Entschuldigung, Joachim, Ihr Verfahren funktioniert nicht. Dimas Partitur hat keine abzuwählenden Tenutos. Ihr Verfahren wählt alles Artikulierte und Nicht-Artikulierte aus.
It would be nice to have a check box to select notes without articulation, which Dima needs.
different articulation (some of them tenuto or not), some notes with no articulation:
- select the desired passage (or the entire score)
- Choose Advanced filter
- Under Articulation, choose "Any of the selected"
- Check all boxes for all existing articulation in the score
- Click "DESELECT"
This results in a selection of all notes with no articulation.
If this is not what you originally asked for, I am sorry, then I simply didn’t understand the post.

That's it, Joachim!!! Well done. So for Dima:
Select All and goto Advance Filter.
Check 'Any of the Selected'.
Check every box except Tenuto.
Hit Deselect.
Only the notes without articulation are now left selected.
But there is still a problem:
You should now be able to hit the keypad tenuto button to mark the selected non-articulated notes. But for some reason, Sib puts the tenuto mark on every note in the score, including those which are not selected.
This is a bug!!!
This is definitely a bug. To avoid all notes being marked with the tenuto, you do another run with the Advanced filter: this time choosing under Articulation "All" followed by clicking SELECT.
The selections looks now exactly like the one before, but articulation applied on the Keypad will mark only the selected notes.

1. I just updated the Filter With Deselect plugin to give it an option to filter notes with articulations. You can select or deselect such notes. It will filter ALL "normal" articulations, so if you need individual articulations you will still need to use the Advanced Filter.
2. There is really no way to filter notes under slurs, as slurs are separate Line objects. You could possibly go to a lot of trouble to write a custom plugin that would find slurs and then find notes in the range of the slur's start and end bar and position but it would not be trivial by any means.
3. For tied notes, the latest versions of Sib Ultimate (2022.5 or later) have a built-in filter for "non-tied notes", which might possibly be useful:
"New Non-tied Notes Filter
Sibelius now lets you filter non-tied notes (single notes and notes that begin a set of tied notes) within a selection. This is especially
useful for adding articulations to non-tied notes in the selection."
You might have a look at these installable plugins as well:
Simplify Tied-to Notes (selects notes that are tied to: notes that are immediately preceded by a note of the same pitch, in the same voice, with a tie, and removes any articulations and cautionary accidentals on these notes.)
Filter Tied-ToNotes Simple (Filters notes in a selection that are the targets of a tied note, i.e., if one note is tied to a second note, the filter will select the second note.
This plugin will not catch all notes that are tied to. It assumes that the note with the ties immediately precedes its target, and so will miss arpeggiated notes tied to a block chord. It will also miss notes tied to from a note in a different voice. It general, for simple cases it works well, but please check all output carefully, and do not assume it is always correct.)
This plugins make intelligent guesses as to whether notes are tied to another note, since plugins do not have the ability to know if a note is tied to. The guess works most of the time, but not always. You will need to check that notes are properly handled if you use these plugins. Sometimes you need to know which notes are Not tied, and unfortunately, Filter Non-Tied Notes will only select, not deselect. That makes it useful for adding articulations to notes that are not tied-to, but not so useful if you want to remove articulations for notes under a tie.
