Dotted swing rhythm in tempo text
Posted by Boris Svetiev - 18 Jan 11:34AM
I would like to put the following rhythm in the tempo or metronome text: "two eight notes = dotted eight note with beam tied to a 16th note" (indicating a swing rhythm).

It is the right part of the equation that is not easily written in Sibelius as there are only right facing stem beams in the context word menu for tempo text. Is there any other way around this other than making it an image and then inserting it as a system object (I'm not even sure this would work as I have not tried it yet)? Of course just writing SWING is also a last option.

That particular notation should be written in the text style "Metric Modulation" (not "Tempo"), where a right-click will reveal the symbols that you need.

Writing 'Swing' is the FIRST resort. Both musicians and Sibelius playback will understand and respond.

A more usual notation for this - often found in educational music where the teacher seems afraid of just saying 'Swing' - is 'two eight notes = quarter, eighth under a triplet'. But don't. Swing isn't triplets, swing certainly isn't dotted. Swing is Swing. Write 'Swing'.

But, if you must:

Here's a guide to Metric Modulation Text.

http://www.laurencepayne.co.uk/sibelius.html#s

The string you want is qaa az=qa.aa i

Note that it is already provided in the R-click palette when Metric Modulation Text is active.

Thanks everyone for the useful replies, I did not know about this option.
It is not my piece, I am copying a hand written score from a recently deceased composer who wrote it just like that, so I don't have the option to ask him if such a change in the notation text would be acceptable to him. Anyway this takes care of my problem perfectly.

As Satchmo once said, "If you don't know it, you ain't got it".

The trouble with equating Swing to a dotted rhythm is that people might think you meant it! Go on, notate it the proper way! You can always add an editorial note.
