Hiding staves that HAVE music on them
Posted by Billy Dreskin - 14 Sep 08:38PM
If I'm thinking about this incorrectly, please set me straight. I'm working on a score for piano, voice, choir and oboe. I'd like to hide the choir and the oboe, so I can just focus on the voice and accompaniment. Is that possible? I want to hide the entire parts (choir and oboe), regardless of whether there's music on those lines of not.

Thanks in advance!

Billy Dreskin

Passage-select the entire oboe staff, then do ribbon tab "Home" -> "Edit" -> "Hide or Show" to hide all the music and attached items. Then the oboe staff will count as "Empty" and be a candidate for ribbon tab "Layout" -> "Staff Visibility" -> "Hide Empty Staves".

A bit too labor intensive. BUT ... you've turned me on to Layout -> Focus on Staves, which does exactly what I need. It lets me hide whatever I like while I work on specific areas.

Thanks!

No need to hide anything. If you want to work on just the piano and voice, use Layout/StaffVis/Focus and choose those staves. Then hit the top part of that button (magnifying glass icon). To see the complete score again klik on the top part of the button again. Seems complicated, but you'll get the hang of it in a couple of years.

Triple-click in the stave to select it throughout. Press the keyboard shortcut for Hide. Not THAT labour intensive!

The only complication might be if you want to see it again later, and if it's a polyphonic instrument (e.g. piano) where some items, typically rests, are already hidden for layout purposes. Reversing the Hide will reveal them too.

I maybe wrong, Laurence, but I'm pretty sure that Billy only wants to focus on the staves that he's working on (i.e. voice and piano). He doesn't need to hide the contents of the oboe and choir staves, just the staves themselves.

That is correct. Layout -> Focus on Staves has done the trick for me. And easy as can be.

Thanks so much for everyone's help!
