Sibelius on iPad is here!
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 29 Jul 01:45PM

Hi All,

We're incredibly excited to announce the immediate availability of Sibelius on the iPad! This introduces brand new workflows for creating and editing scores on the go, and takes advantage of the iPad's form, touch interface and Apple Pencil support.

You can download the App directly from the Apple App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sibelius/id1503221259

This is a free app and mimics the tiers on Desktop (Sibelius First, Sibelius, Sibelius Ultimate). If you already have a current subscription or Update and Support plan in your Avid Master Account:

https://my.avid.com/products

You can log into the app and it'll unlock the Sibelius or Sibelius Ultimate features at no extra cost - it's all part of your plan.

However, if you are on an older version of Sibelius and wish to get current, you can get a discounted subscription to Sibelius Ultimate with the Crossgrade:

https://shop.avid.com/ccrz__ProductDetails?viewState=DetailView&cartID=&sku=SBDYNA20021

When you get current, you now get the latest version of Sibelius across Windows, Mac and iPadOS, along with all the future updates we release and access to Sibelius Cloud Sharing.

If you aren't ready to upgrade at this time (and that's totally fine!), you can still check out the app and use it in its Sibelius First tier, and create and edit music up to 4 staves. Like its Desktop counterpart, you can still open scores that are much larger than that for reviewing and playing back. You can also start a 1 month free trial to unlock more features by starting a monthly subscription in-app (just remember to cancel it before the month is up if you don't want to be charged).

To read more about this, and how we tackled many of the design challenges, see the blog:

https://www.avid.com/resource-center/introducing-sibelius-for-mobile

For those interested in what's coming next on desktop, rest assured we've kept the desktop builds in lockstep with the new features on iPad. We'd like to get a few more things in before releasing it, so watch this space.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with Sibelius on your iPad!

Sam and the Sibelius team

Is that it? No updates for over five months and all for Sibelius on iPad?

Now, I don't have a horse in the race, but if I did I might be disappointed.

At least we can guess why Dorico was so keen to make their announcement yesterday. I do realise from the reaction to that, however, that a lot of users are very excited about notation on an iPad, so no doubt there will be Sibelius users who will be similarly enthusiastic.

And to address Mike's feedback, indeed this the iPad release. We're introducing the first stage of a large technology shift away from just Win and Mac machines, to basically having Sibelius run on any device. This is also one of the most requested features/workflows we've ever had, and it's a biggy so we've spent the time to get it right!

Rest assured though, we have a desktop release that will be following closely. It'll contain some of the goodness from the mobile app (because it's derived from the same app, of course), plus the long awaited improvements to the software activation flow. Work on the latter has been underway for a while by our IT team so the back-end is there and ready for us to develop against.

With our larger dev team (that's still growing!), we're now placed to work on Sibelius across multiple platforms, and go back to our regular release schedule too.

Sam

Thanks Sam, good to know there's much life in Sibelius yet! However useful I'm sure the iPad and other mobile versions will be, my main concern is the slowness of Sibelius desktop version and whether this will get addressed at some point i.e. the fact that Sibelius only uses a single CPU core when navigating, editing and inputting, as it gets awfully laggy on larger scores with multiple VST's. It often just can't keep up with my workflow, taking many valuable seconds to catch up with my clicks or entries. I don't have Dorico but they make a point on their website of saying it's architecture "allows multiple operations to be carried out in parallel across multiple cores. Scrolling through even the largest of projects is always smooth and responsive." This is my biggest wish for Sibelius....please do it!

It's quite far down the list in the store since it's still brand new.

You can go to this link:
https://www.avid.com/sibelius/for-mobile

And scroll down to where it says:
Or download the music notation app on the Apple App Store
…and click on the Apple Store link. (Justin has a direct link above.)

(That’s not annoying, I’ve been typing for 15 minutes on my iPad and had to sign in to post this and lost all my typing 🤦‍♂️)

For Aug 4 I signed up for a Webinar at noon EST to learn how to use the iPad version.

It’s tough searching on the App Store. The one you want is free. If you received an email from AVID it is easier.

I’m now trying to figure out how to add a stave or subtract a couple.

Ahhh, here it is, the 4th video:
https://youtu.be/tqSJLw3OpwQ

To delete a stave, select the whole stave by triple clicking on it, push the magnifying glass in the upper right and then select delete. Pretty cool!

Congratulations Sam and AVID, it looks quite beautiful!

"I tell you P this stinks", "oh sorry" "not you them!" waited months for updates on a program that has been patched more than a patchwork quit, and needs a complete overhaul, rather than rewriting this which is long overdue lets start a whole new system, as we have no idea still what the finsbury park lads did still.

For the 25-30 percent of people who have an ipad lets not worry about the fact that the mac and pc users will form the majority of our user base and have been paying hundreds of pounds, and just hope they will be pleased with the fact that we have actually done something.

Well I tell you I am not pleased whatsoever. I know you say you have other updates on hand, but also the fact that you have ported scorch to ipad and now ported sibelius to ipad without a single thought to android users is frankly further disingenuous particularly on your forced pay now or pay more later if you fall off the bandwagon stance for perpetual users.

I don't have a horse in the race either (I use computers, not overpriced iToys).

Somebody ought to make a feature comparison of the two apps, but Daniel said in a different context a few months back, "I'm not going to gloat about the state of the competition" so I guess Steinberg won't do it. And I can't imagine that Avid would want to publish it either.

Just from the videos on the Scoring notes blog, the overall comparison looks to me like:

Sibelius: About the same functionality as Sibelius 2 used to have, back in the day. Definitely *less* functionality than Sib 4.

Dorico: Several new features that aren't yet in the desktop versions at all (though they probably will be in Dorico, 4 whenever it finally arrives).

Of course the really sad thing is that this isn't surprising.

Make sure your settings don't have the iPad on silent mode.

Maybe you all should get a warning about that in the next version.

surprising.

While generally agree with nothing Rob says, I have agree with him here.

I *do* have a horse in the race (if am yearly support subscription counts as a horse) but I have no Mac devices. Nor do I have any desire to run Sibelius on a smart phone or any other small screen device.

I foolishly had hope that, after the long delay, something of interest (maybe even something exciting) would be announced. Instead I see an announcement clearly indication I do not belong in Avid's target demographic.

That's a pretty ignorant comment. The iPad is a powerful tool. No, it's not meant to replace a desktop machine, but that doesn't mean it's a toy. It's extremely powerful - you just have to know its use case and how it complements your work-flow (and it may not be for YOU, but that's no reason to trash the product).

Oh, and I can assure you the folks at Avid are not going to devote time, money, and resources towards a "toy". Give me a break!

I know you say you have other updates on hand, but also the fact that you have ported scorch to ipad and now ported sibelius to ipad without a single thought to android users is frankly further disingenuous particularly on your forced pay now or pay more later if you fall off the bandwagon stance for perpetual users.

Let's be clear, we are definitely looking into the other platforms out there to support Sibelius on. This release is just the first step in our goal to have it available on any platform possible and all users will benefit from the new improvements on all the others. We're not ruling out any platform, including Android.

As Sam has said before, we've had more requests to port Sibelius to the iPad than any other development request. So we did it. We're now going to use what we've learned and bring the new features to desktop.

When are you going to overhaul the pc and mac programs, rather than just aimlessly patching them, still seems like you are still struggling to decompile the mac and pc systems to make them better. There is some features on the ipad that i would like for my touchscreen pc, and I note you say you will be implementing these in due course, I accept that. its nice to have it on all platforms granted but you would think you would start with trying to improve what you already had, my suspicious mind says its easier fir yiu to start from ground up rather than overhaul apps that were made by another engineer. tell me im wrong.

It might be beneficial for all if a separate post, or perhaps an official blog posting happened that explained and made crystal clear some of Avid's new policies. Some ideas:

1. The "frequent updates" didn't happen. It should have been explained, it wasn't. Therefore, it should be put in writing so we're not expecting something that might not happen. This would benefit Avid, transparency is always the best choice.

2. Notation/notation software is complex, the customers are bright. Nobody has to explain that "someday, this might affect you as well", it's easy to grasp. Therefore....

3. It should be explained, in writing, that some updates/releases might be only for left-handed people, those born on Mondays, Pisces or whatever. I've been using Sibelius for 15 years, this is the first release that can only be downloaded and used by some of the customers and not all. Again, this benefits Avid as there wouldn't be blowback of the kind that is happening. It's disappointing to wait around for 6 months then find out there's nothing for you, even though you paid in advance... but if it had been mentioned, at least that would help. This is not a difficult concept.

4. It would be helpful if Avid explained their goals. It would be great to see, in writing, that Avid's first priority is Sibelius Software. Or, be honest and say "our focus as of late will be this mobile thingy". It would help customers decide if they wish to continue.

We are now all aware of the "big reveal" etc, fine. Now, moving forward, it would be helpful for all if these issues were made clear, put in writing, and discussed.

The iPad app looks great, but where is the modernization of the desktop UI? The app just looks dated. I don't recall which version the ribbon toolbar was added in Sibelius, but I do know it was first introduced by Microsoft back in 2007. Hopefully some of the iPad look and feel will soon make its way over to the Mac and PC.

We are definitely working to port some of the new UX to Sibelius on desktop. We're also acutely aware of the gap we've had between releases. As such we have a desktop release coming shortly as we redistribute the development team's time and energy. Rest assured, Avid's priority is making Sibelius even better, as evidenced by their expansion of the dev team (including myself).

I have already commented on the mismanagement by Avid of the situation whereby next to no information was forthcoming regarding an extended period with a lack of "updates" until people started squealing.

Probably it was impossible to say that the latest release would benefit some, but not all, Sibelius users without giving the game away. However, there were other and better ways of handling that.

Those who are not interested in iPads and who are on a subscription plan are feeling cheated and rightly so. I realise Avid representatives are trying hard to placate them with vague promises of better things to come, but it doesn't look good.

In the meantime, a certain competitor beat Avid to the draw and produced an iPad version which also included some innovations which PC/Mac users now want, having made it clear beforehand that the forthcoming release would not be a new version of the program. Somewhere in there is a lesson for Avid.

Wow, tough crowd. Some of you would complain if you were given a million dollars. Not sure what the complaint would be, but you'd find one! Look, iPads are insanely popular devices, so it only makes sense that they would start with an iPadOS app. They've already said in this thread that they're not ruling out other platforms. So chill out, ok?

Look, iPads are insanely popular devices,

For the sake of "interesting stuff" and a little levity:

iPad is about 31% of the market
Samsung 20%
Lenovo 10%
Amazon 8%
Others 30%

I'm sure there are real and good reasons for favoring iPad as far as programming, how many in music fields use them etc. I never really knew so I used the Google. From what I saw on the official video(and being in the android camp), it looks like Avid did an excellent job on it.

I'd be curious if people want to weigh on their experiences so far. I write big orchestrations and often have a timeline, I tend to work quickly. I'd be curious if others in the same boat feel they can work quickly enough with it or is it more for sketching etc.

LMPaule,

I much agree. I’ve been happily messing around this evening (once Justin explained that — stupid me — you have to turn silent mode off). It’s really very, very good. I’ve tried pretty much them all: Staffpad, Notion, Symphony Pro, Komp, and now Dorico and Sibelius. This is far and away the easiest to use, especially combining the Apple Pencil with a keyboard. It’s really intuitive and fast.

I’ve been on the verge of bolting to Dorico, but this may hold me.

Now, if the next desktop release will give us some real DAW-like controls, like Dorico…and also port those to the iPad version. That’s where Dorico shines.

But Dorico’s iPad version suffers again from (at least for me) very awkward and counterintuitive note entry, like the desktop version of Dorico. And rather bizarrely no use of Apple Pencil at all, at least at this point.

For some reason, I can't get the Apple Pencil to work with note entry as demonstrated on the YouTube video. I tap bar where I want to enter a note, tap the purple keypad icon, tap the desired note value, but then when I go to tap and hold on the bar, no note appears as it does in the video demonstration. And tilting the Apple Pencil has no effect on notes already there when I tap and hold on them. What am I missing here?

Ok, yes, that worked at least for getting the Apple Pencil to create a note when tapping on the bar, but how strange that in the video demo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXpCXgMS2Lg) they didn't have to do that. When they tapped on the bar with the pencil, the keypad automatically switched to the note value. Actually, you don't have to select the bar first at all (that's actually was what was causing my issue) - all you have to do is tap the keypad icon, select the note value, and then just tap in whichever bar (and whichever beat of that bar) you want to insert a note.

But I still can't get the tilt gestures to change the accidental or note values as shown in the video demo above.

Well, it's a freebie for anyone that already has Sibelius, so if you already have an iPad, there is no downside.

For those who do not have an iPad - like me - the question is: is it worth buying an iPad, and if so, which one?

I'm a little bit on the fance here but there is also the Dorico app so there is that.

Downloaded the Sibelius iPad app yesterday. Really powerful and easy to use. For me, it seems the app will be useful to write down ideas and start new pieces or arrangements, then opening them in Ultimate to continue writing and finalizing.

One thing though, in the Sibelius app, I don't have any sound on bassoon and contrabassoon. Most of all the other instruments I've tried generate a sound when I apply a note on a staff, not these two. When I open the same file in Ultimate, the bassoon and contrabassoon sounds are active.

Hello
I just got a bluetooth keyboard for my iPad so I can benefit fully from Sibelius Ultimate but there seem to be a problem with the numbers (top row) and the shift key. It works fine in other apps so I was wondering about a possible compatibility problem with AZERTY keyboards? Any thoughts?

Using the iPad Magic Keyboard:
- the unshifted numbers do indeed correspond to the note values of the keypad;
- the shifted numbers do "Add Interval Above".

These are exactly in line with the notebook/laptop default keyboard shortcuts in the macOS/Windows versions.

I get the same results with an external wired keyboard.

If your keyboard does not do the same, then the issue might be with the keyboard.

"Using the iPad Magic Keyboard:

Interesting; I get the opposite result on my AZERTY laptop keyboard, selecting NOTEBOOK Shortcut menu in preferences:
- the unshifted numbers do "Add Interval Above".
- the shifted numbers correspond to the note values of the keypad
(Sibelius doesn't care and makes no difference between French and French numerical keyboard...)

Concerning the iPad version of Ultimate, I tried every possibilities of keyboard configurations between my iPad and my bluetooth keyboard and it appears that numbers and Shift-numbers function only when my keyboard is in QWERTY mode, which is unusable with an AZERTY keyboard...The issue is not with the keyboard as I tried 3 different ones and the result is still the same.

I would be very grateful to the people at Sibelius if they could give us a procedure that would make an AZERTY keyboard work the same way as a QWERTY.

Thank you for your help

Just one check: have you configured the iPad settings for external keyboard to tell the iPad that it is an AZERTY keyboard?

As Sibelius for iPad just came out a few days ago, I thought I would get the ball rolling on requests for the next version. I am very happy with V1.0 but, there is room for improvement. So, here goes.

- Add a Repeat button. This should be easy to get to.
- Add a Help menu
- Add a Transpose function
- Add a simpler way to get to the Undo, Copy, Repeat, Undue functions. The triple finger tap is tedious and slows down my workflow. How about just a button on top that can pull this up.
- The word menu that is pulled up from the MF button on the on-screen keyboard scrolls too fast. It should be slowed down. It is hard to pick the right choice.

I encourage you to add to this list. Thanks again to the development team for this great app.

I watched the Sibelius mobile iPad app Webinar but stepped away to practice at points.

Is there a way to view it now?

It said "recording" and I thought that meant on my end, but obviously not.

It was a really good presentation!!!

You can run the windows desktop version on your Surface Pro, the Surface is a windows computers with the same OS as desktop computers.

That said I'd like a 'smaller' version for the Surface with a user interface like that of the app for the iPad, to take advantage of the smaller screen.

I asked this question during today's Webinar and indeed, you can NOT currently extract and print single parts.

But the subject has been raised and I expect it in a future mobile version.

I guess for now the score could be sent to a computer and printed out from there as a workaround, though I haven't gotten that far yet on the mobile app.

I took the plunge and bought an iPad pro.

Can some kind sould explain again how I can download the app through the Apple store without having to subscribe?

I should be able to log into my avid account and download the app, correct?

My initial experience with Apple iPad is not exactly 'user friendly' to put it mildly, everything is just confusing. This is not a disparaging comment towards Avid and Sam, just to be sure.

Other way around. Download the app called "Sibelius".
In the "Sibelius" app, pull down the "..." menu, and select "Manage Subscription".
Take the option to sign in to an existing Sibelius account.

Thanks Robin.

I think I did something wrong, I get a pop up "Manage Apple subscription". If I tap that I see a little purple Sibelius icon that says Sibelius Ultimate for mobile / free for one month.

I must have done something wrong when I installed it, and accidentally purchased a plan.

Note entry doesn't work either by the way, the only thing I can enter is rests.

Maybe I'm just too dumb for this whole Apple thing.

If you 'bought' the wrong thing in the App Store, you might have signed up for a subscription, with the first month as a free trial. It can be cancelled.

Though Apple encourage you to set up a payment method on your Apple id, you don't HAVE to. Did you?

Re:

Peter, (this is copy and paste from the top of this post)

____
If you downloaded an app that was NOT the purple colored Sibelius app and paid for it, explain that to Apple and they will refund you.

The app works without a subscription with four staves only so you can trial it. If you get a subscription, make sure you get the best deal for yourself.

Thanks Laurence and Richie. I did set up a payment method (thought that that was required), and I do think I signed up for the Apple plan, with the first month for free.

I cannot seem to change that back (I have a current Ultimate license for desktop).

Also I cannot enter notes, only rests ... it's all very strange.

And the keypad, what should the color be? White or black?

Peter, here is the Webinar I attended on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8xD0YA_l-4

When you open the Sib app on iPad you'll see a B@W score. Keypad is white and black.

Everything else is purple. On the bottom right is a black 8th note that is in a purple circle and press that and the familiar Sib Keypad comes up.

I have a new CD coming out and should be in San Fran next year. We'll get a taco and coffee!

I called you. Call me back if you wish :-)

And in the meantime, I figured it out with the note entry: you have to hold the note value down for a little while before you can enter it. Can't say I like that very much but maybe I have to get used to the system.

The Apple pencil (I know...one more thing to buy) for $100 makes note entry 100% easier. I also use it for my drawing apps. See 27 min into video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8xD0YA_l-4

Though the iPad app is made to work with the finger (a little clumsy) for students and if you're on a plane, ideally the Apple pencil is the correct tool for the aficionado.

It's similar to the difference between having a MIDI keyboard or using the mouse to compose in Windows.

I'll hit you up in a few days.

Hi – I just wondered whether the reason I have some Sibelius first on the iPad, having signed into my full account as directed when I first got the app, is because I have an upgrade version on the desktop rather than the full version?

I have Sibelius 7 (with all the latest patches) is an upgrade on my desktop, but it means I have a limitation on the tier on the iPad which is silly because I can access everything on my computer but it’s not duplicated on iPad?

Thanks.

Are you up to date with your subscription and/or support plan? If you're still using Sibelius 7 (from 10 years ago now), you would most certainly not be up to date and thus would not qualify to get Sibelius for Mobile at no cost.

Re: Sibelius upgrade level to iPad as full tier?

Hi Justin

Thanks for this.

I had Sib 1 full then upgraded to 2, then 3 then 5 then 7 and have latest updates for that upgrade on my PC running win10.

So with all that in mind, will I only get Sib ‘First’ on iPad, unless I upgrade to latest Sibelius?

Sib 7.5 (or whatever latest is) works very well on PC and I just wanted to be able to continue on that basis on the move on the iPad equivalent (but e.g. when importing let’s say e.g. a 16 stave score I’ve been working on on the PC, it won’t let me edit on iPad because of the limitation).

Is the requirement for the iPad to reflect the way I’ve been working on the PC therefore to pay for something on the PC, iPad or both?

Thanks for your time.

Yes, you’ve got the idea. The iPad version is a ‘perk’ for people who’ve kept their Sibelius subscription or support deal up to date.

You’re not missing too much. Unless portability is a paramount requirement, the iPad version is a highly inconvenient way of working on a score.

You will obtain Sibelius First only on the iPad, unless you have either:
- a current Subscription Licence for Sibelius Ultimate; or
- a current "Support and Update Plan" for a Perpetual Licence for Sibelius Ultimate.

The first iPad edition of Sibelius is equivalent to Sibelius version 2021.7, so you need a licence which permits use of that version number.

iPad mini would be most convenient in terms of ‘pocket-portability’ but I’m guessing that the largest screen possible would be the most satisfying experience in terms of actual work

I've been using Sibelius on an iPad Pro. It's pricey but incredibly useful since you get a lot of screen space to work in and the Pencil support is really critical for precise selecting and such.
