By which I mean, there seems to be very little difference in terms of volume between the different dynamical markings (p, mp, f etc). A section in forte sounds almost the same as a section in piano...

I'm using the latest version of Sibelius ultimate, and a very good laptop (new MacBook Air) so neither of those should be the issue. I have playback set to meccanico because expressivo leads to unwanted variations in dynamics but in the wrong places...

Please help :"(

What Playback Configuration are you using?

Have you tried disabling "Live Playback" (which disables dynamic markings if notes have velocities attached).

For further advice on playback issues, please attach the Sibelius .sib score file in question, so that we can examine it and try to figure out what is causing the problem.
