Sib. 6.x: defining swing feel in temporarily swung sections
Posted by Seb Palmer - 22 Feb 01:27PM
Hi,

I write scores for drums (only), using my old Sib 6 software.

I need to be able to define the type of swing feel in a score that moves in and out of swung and straight sixteenths. As things stand, simpy creating 'tempo text' that says swing gives what I think is an 1/8th note swing feel, which is totally NOT what I need! How do I do this?

Thanks, Seb.

Look in the Playback Dictionary for words assigned to different types of Swing. 'Swing 16' should do what you want.

Hi Laurence, in a score that is entirely in swung 1/16ths that's fine.

But this is a page filled with different 1/16th note beats, all from different songs, and all at different tempos, and some in straight 1/16ths, some in swung 1/16ths.

For teaching purposes it doesn't matter too much, it only needs to looks right. But when I'm creating and editing these I need/want to have them play back as they should.

In the instance illustrated by my attached file I used this method:

'Add a Tempo Text object by clicking Create, Text, Tempo. Type the word 'Swing' into the tempo text object. When you want to change back to straight playback without swing, simply follow the same instructions above, but this time using the word 'Straight' instead of 'Swing'.'

... that text is lifted straight from Sibelius online help documentation. But it doesn't achieve what I need. I get what sounds like swung 1/8ths, not swung 1/6ths. It sounds totally wrong/dreadful!

Seb

OK, thanks, Loz.

Got it now.

I replaced the text 'swing' with 'swing 16ths' and, whilst it hasn't got the exact level of swing I want, it's at least in the right ball park.

Thanks again, and all the best, Seb.

You can edit the definition of 'Swing 16' in the Dictionary. Or you can create a customised Dictionary entry.

In current Sibelius versions instructions like 'Swing' can be applied per-stave as well as per-system. But not, I'm afraid, in Sibelius 6.

Some day, and the sooner the better, I'll upgrade!

Lack o'shekels constrains me at present. It's also why I'm working on Jurassic age Apple equipt, as well. Hey-ho! There will be an upgrading... one day...
