Addictive Keys
Posted by Salieri - 28 Nov 08:07PM
There was a brief exchange a few years ago about Addictive Keys, but nothing since, so I am starting a new thread. I have been dissatisfied with the piano sound in Sibelius 7 Sounds, and several people recommended Addictive Keys (AK). The video on the Sweetwater (retailer) website certainly produced a richer, more natural sound than Sibelius Sounds, so I bought and installed AK. And I do notice an improvement. But the sound doesn’t match what’s on the video. On my system, both use the same speakers (Stereophile AV-40) and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i-4. So the problem must be in the settings – either on Sibelius, on AK, or both.
AK has extremely complicated “mic” settings; it would take months to go through all the possible combinations, and I haven’t tried. I have tried different sound sets on the Sibelius playback configuration screen, but changing the sound set (e.g. to the Yamaha XG) doesn’t seem to make much difference.
If anyone in the group is using AK and getting good piano sound, I’d appreciate your sharing the settings you use on AK and Sibelius. Thanks.

The selection of "SoundSet" is quite irrelevant to playback quality.

It is unlikely that any of the SoundSets that ship with Sibelius are entirely appropriate to third-party sample libraries. You might have struck lucky purely because there is only one instrument in the sample library. None of the shipping SoundSets will support any special features that a 3rd-party sample library might have to offer.

Anyone know it the Sound Set Project is still in business, or has it just gone away. Too bad - it was very helpful.

5 or 6 years ago I sent Jonathan a query asking about new sound sets. I have lost the response but I think he mentioned working on a new sound set editing tool that was taking him much longer than expected. My impression was that he would start working on sound sets again when he got that finished, but apparently it never happened.

The Sound Set Projects web page has had no additions since 2014 but has a 2020 copyright so I think it's still being maintained. His other web pages (such as Sound Notes) also have current copyright dates, but they have static content so there's no way to tell if he's still a consultant for music technology.
