Sib. 7.1.3: Can't figure out Latency problem
Posted by Art Resnick - 26 Nov 09:36PM
I am trying (for the first time in quick awhile) to live record but the latency is a beat late or more and as a result
not only the output is totally wrong but of course it doesn't
play back the way I played it in. I tried transforming but it messed it up even further.
Anything I've entered before was step by step. Too laborious.

What Playback Configuration do you have selected?
If the Playback Configuration is "General MIDI (Basic)", or "NotePerformer", then that is the problem. You need to be using a low-latency playback configuration, such as "Sibelius 7 Sounds".

To follow on from Robin's advice, the MA 2496 should be capable of very low latency figures. Mine's set around 10ms and I can go rather lower and still stay stable if the piece isn't too complex. And that's with a 10 year old Win 7 PC! Yours will surely equal or better that.

It's also worth searching on line for Daniel Spreadbury's excellent article 'Taming the Flexitime Beast'which gives good advice about the ins and outs of live recording.

I tried it, quickly gave up, and can easily input faster than I can play in live - and then have to edit!

The worse a keyboard player you are, the better you will succeed at flexi-time. If you are a pro standard player there are myriad small changes in the way you play that Sib will interpret and do its best to notate.

I have found that you need to play in strict tempo and as woodenly as possible if you expect the notation to be anything like readable when you're done.

Or possibly quite the opposite! Precise playing may not always be the most musical choice, but it certainly requires technique!

I well remember my 'Christ! Is THAT what I played?' moment when I first got a sequencer (Steinberg Pro 24 on Atari ST).

Email notifications don't work reliably even if you do check it.

Thanks Andy. I'll check the article (probably won't understand it at my age) but more than likely will end up doing the same as you.

With Sibelius 7.x, you cannot record FlexiTime with NotePerformer as playback, without encountering huge latency problems.
