I believe I asked this question a couple days ago; however, it seems to have disappeared. I'll ask it again.
I have always saved my .sib to my desktop; however, that option has suddenly not been available in the past couple days. I would like to continue to save to desktop, because I have folders for each of my compositions on my desktop, and I keep all information for each composition in its folder.
Can anyone help me retrieve the ability to save to desktop?
Liz, your thread did not disappear. It has just gone way down the list because it took you a while to come back and check. You received two replies from Robin on the same day you posted it. It's there if you look down the list (Title: Saving to desktop) but here is a direct link:
Please do not rely on email notifications of replies. They do not work reliably. You need to come back yourself and check very regularly. And try not to add a "Poll' to your threads, as you have done with this one.
I've been told that saving to the Desktop can be problematic in that it can slow down your machine, and have experienced this as well. Therefore I've always saved to the default Documents > Scores. Within Scores, you can create new subfolders to organize the files associated with your various projects.
This being said, you can always locate your Scores folder, and then create a shortcut to it on your desktop!
In the olden days, having excess desktop icons might have slowed down a computer. Now it's just a messy and inefficient filing method. Use your Documents folder and its sub-folders for the intended purpose. As Jeff says, you can always Shortcut the Scores folder on the Desktop.
Thank you so much everyone! I'm sorry I haven't replied before now. My computer totally crashed oh, and I had to order another one. I'm actually going to also try to get a refurbished iMac like I already have, since it was brand new one will be a different operating system and will most likely be problematic for my sibelius files. I'm thinking that if I get a refurbished older one to be a backup that might be a good idea.
But I also wanted to comment on the answers. I guess I should have taken a course in running sibelius oh, because I did not know about saving to the default scores and setting up subfolders. That sounds like an excellent idea. I did do the shortcuts on my desktop to open the sibelius files by going to find and driving it to my desktop. But while I was working on it, that's when I started having flashing lights on the desktop and then a total crash. I think perhaps I was working on a score and also another document that I had found to find without moving it to the desktop. I think I was actually working on the documents while it was in find. I think I've been unwittingly destroying my iMac by Saving to the desktop and then driving to the desktop from find. I thought I had a good system by having a sibelius composition file on my desktop and inside it have all of my sub folders. But perhaps that was just not the right way to handle it. Thank you so much for your suggestions, which I will follow in the future.
Now my next project will be to upgrade Sebelius and get it installed on my new computer when it arrives in a few weeks. All this when I have a lot on my plate already oh, some of which I just have to cancel because of this setback.
I apologize for all of the typos in my last reply. Currently I'm having to dictate into my phone, and transcribing errors happen in cyberspace. It is maddening.
>I think I was actually working on the documents while it was in find. I think I've been unwittingly destroying my iMac by Saving to the desktop and then driving to the desktop from find.
No, this won't have damaged your computer. If an expert's opinion is that you need a new computer, the failure of this one will have been for other reasons.
PLEASE tell us you have an up-to-date backup of all your Sibelius work! It won't magically re-appear when you install Sibelius on a new computer.
I do have up-to-date backups of all my work. I'm hoping that when I install those onto my new computer that the computer will read them. I think the Sebelius is in 32-bit processing and a new computer will read 64-bit processing. Am I saying that correctly? That is very confusing.
A Sibelius file is a Sibelius file. Whether the computer is 32-bit or 64-bit is irrelevant.
Whatever version of Sibelius you use, it will be able to open files made in that version or in earlier versions.

Thanks, Chris for your reply I'm confused about how sibelius will react to the new iMac. I currently have version 7.3.1, and my new computer will be the new iMac with Catalina operating system. Where do I get information about how to upgrade and what version to use? I kept getting conflicting information when I try to search for an answer.

Thank you so much for your reply. I need to get more information about what this subscription means. Is it true, that I will not be able to get a Perpetual license with this type of upgrade? Can you explain to me how the subscription works? Will I still own my compositions and have continue or access to them? I'm quite nervous about this.

> Can you explain to me how the subscription works?
You pay a monthly subscription to Avid. The subscription includes Support and regular updates of Sibelius to the most recent version. If/when you stop the monthly payments, Sibelius stops working completely.
Your existing scores are not destroyed when the subscription expires, but you will lack an application with which to open them.

Sibelius 2020.9/7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 2020.1, Windows 10 64-bit 16GB. Desktop, and Microsoft Surface Book.
With the subscription,
1.how will I access Sibelius?
2.Will I open it from my desktop?
3.Will my .sib files be on my computer?
4.can I make a back-up on a thumb drive and external harddrive and iCloud?
5.Are there any limitations to using Sibelius subscription other than what you described if my subscription expires?
Please be absolutely sure you understand the current purchase/upgrade/rental system for Sibelius before committing to anything. Particularly your (very limited) options for upgrading your present version, the difference between a Perpetual licence with support subscription and a Rental licence, and what happens if you let either one lapse.
It's complicated.
It's different to what you signed up to when you bought your Sibelius 7.
Thank you, Laurence. You mention rental. Is that what is meant by the subscription? Or is that something different?
Can you direct me to the site where I would proceed from here? Would that be the Avid site?
I presume I need to upgrade from my current version which is 7.3.1, to the ultimate version?
And then proceed to sign up for a subscription?
Should I wait until my new computer arrives, or should I do that as soon as possible even though I don't have my new computer yet, it will arrive December 21st.
I would like to know specifically how much it's going to cost.
