Strange substitute characters when printing
Posted by Jonty Nowell - 20 Nov 01:56PM
Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a new and interesting problem with printing to a network printer from Sibelius in Windows. Instances of fonts such as OpusText or chord symbol fonts appear to be replaced on printing, with music symbols such as accidentals etc replaced with conventional text (but weirdly, also sometimes with other, incorrect, music symbols). The printer is a new arrival at the school where I work, a Kyocera TASKalfa 4053ci. This hasn't happened with other similar network printers previously, and I have tried downloading and installing the most up to date driver I could find but to no avail. The issue seems to be with printer/driver as Sibelius is performing entirely as expected at home and with other printers. I'm somewhat ignorant of the finer technical details here, and never needed to venture into this territory before, so my apologies if the solution is blindingly obvious! Thanks for any insight.

Is the computer generating the printing on macOS or on Windows?
What version number of Sibelius is doing the printing?

Sibelius 2020.9/7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 2020.1, Windows 10 64-bit 16GB. Desktop, and Microsoft Surface Book.

Thank you Robin

If Sibelius is printing correctly to other printers on the same network, then it does sound rather like a printer driver problem.

If the score is exported to PDF, and the PDF is checked to be correct, will the PDF print to this printer correctly?

Hmm, not sure on that one - an exported pdf looked fine on screen, but haven't had chance to print it to hard copy from the pdf - I'll give that a try on Monday and report back! Thanks for your help so far.

Hi Robin (and anyone else who's been head-scratching on my account) - I managed to do a few more experiments yesterday and it seems that it is entirely to do with printer/driver issues. I don't normally print much that isn't from Sibelius, but tried a few different filetypes and had multiple issues! Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time, and thanks for your help - I'll go and bug Kyocera next!!
