Sib. 7.5: Sibelius Becomes De-Activated, Now Counts Prior Activations on Device Count
Posted by Elliot Wright - 19 Nov 01:03AM
Hi there,

I am using Sibelius 7.5 on a Windows 10 PC. About two weeks ago upon startup, Sibelius displayed the message "There was an error initializing the licensing engine" (see attachment - first screengrab) and instructed me to delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Avid\Licenses\Sibelius. Upon restart, Sibelius asked me to Activate the program (second screengrab), which I did with my System ID and Activation ID. However, I was given an error in the bottom-left corner of the Avid License Control Dialog, reading "101 Activation Failed: Total Device Count Exceeded" (third screengrab).

Initially, I resolved the issue by digging out my old retired computer and deactivating the copy of Sibelius on it to reduce the device count - this worked, but only for a day. The next day, I got the same errors as above; and after inputting my System and Activation IDs, I got the 'device count exceeded' error again. It seems that each time this issue happens and Sibelius de-activates itself, it still keeps the device count. I'm not sure what might have caused the issue in the first place, but I believe there was a recent Windows 10 update, if that helps shed some light on the situation.

Would I need Avid to de-activate on their end any current activations I have so that I can start fresh? And is there anything I can do on my end to ensure my copy of Sibelius doesn't become deactivated again? Time is an increasingly critical factor at the moment, so any assistance is appreciated.

Contact the licensing team directly or email ingrid.guce@avid.com.

Symptoms such as those reported here are a consequence of the computer changing its Device ID for Avid licensing purposes.

The following things might cause a computer to change its Device ID:
- turning Bluetooth on or off;
- using a VPN;
- plugging or unplugging a dongle used for network access.

Thank you Robin,

I did notice a change when I turned off Bluetooth, but unfortunately not a resolution.

Now, upon attempting to activate Sibelius I'm getting a new error, saying that my Device ID is not he same as the one registered for this Activation ID -although both are copied and pasted from My Avid account.

It would appear though that you are correct that BT has something to do with this - now I'm concerned though, will Sibelius encounter these issues if I activate it while BT is turned on, and then use it when BT is off? Or if I turn BT on and off between usages?

If you wish to use Sibelius, you should return the Bluetooth on/off status to the setting that it had when Sibelius was last "activated".

Seems like a bad idea for Avid to be doing this. People should really be allowed to turn BlueTooth on and off without deactivating their software.

Makes sense. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be working. I will probably have to contact licensing directly.

Besides that, is there any way to reset the Device IDs that are registered to my Activation IDs? (I assume that wouldn't be possible on my end for security reasons, but worth a shot if there's a way!)

The error shown above suggests a mismatch between System ID and Activation ID, rather than any difficulty with the computer's Device ID. Double-check that the numbers are correct.

I concur, but that find me in a sticky situation - how do I get Sibelius to activate on my computer if its device ID is no longer the same as what's registered to the Activation ID? It's the same computer that Sibelius has been registered on for years, so I'm not sure why the device ID has suddenly changed.

Is there anything I can do on my end? I haven't heard back from Ms Guce or Mr Puszet, but surely the action of resetting which device IDs are registered to my Activation ID would need to take place on Avid's end?

I'm unclear why you are still concerned with Device ID, when the error message was about the correspondence between System ID and Activation ID, with no reference to a Device ID problem.

What evidence is there of a Device ID problem?

I think I was getting the term 'Device ID' from the fields which are brought up when using the alternative to activate Sibelius through another computer's internet connection. I had tried that once or twice to see if it would work, and as of yesterday it was giving me an error along those lines.

On the upside, upon trying that option again to see if I could get a screengrab to show, the activation appears to have worked.

Thank you for your patience - here's hoping it stays activated! :)

All the best,

E Wright
