Sib. 6.x: Tenor clef?
Posted by Richard H Wallis - 27 Sep 09:36AM
Hi All

I have Sibelius 6 (old I know but it does enough for me at the moment).

I am looking for a way to input some music in tenor clef into Sibelius but I can't find any instrument that gives me this option. Am I looking for something that isn't there please or am I missing something obvious? I found the alto clef (viola).

The reason for the request is that I have a piece written in tenor clef for trombone and I need to transcribe it to treble clef in Bb for clarinet. I know that trombone players in brass bands (treble clef readers) simply remove 2 flats from the key signature and play as written but I was wondering if I can get Sibelius to do the work for me.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Richard

Select the first measure of the staff or part, hit "q" & select tenor clef, OK. Tenor clef is the one just below alto clef in the gallery (middle C on the 4th line).
PS. Actually, I'm surprised that sib doesn't have a ready made trombone in tenor clef as it is the norm in orchestral scores for tenor trombone. And it used to be the norm in very early brass band scores too, before they had to come into line with the Adolphe Sax system of transposing instruments.

If I understand what Richard is doing correctly, he needs to input/copy into Sibelius music written for Trombone and turn it into a part for Clarinet.

This is what I would do: 1. Create a score with two staves only - trombone and clarinet. 2. Put a tenor clef into the trombone stave, as explained by Adrian. The clarinet stave will already have a treble clef. 3. Input the music into the trombone stave. 4. Copy and paste all the trombone music into the clarinet stave. The transposition will be correct. 5. Print out the clarinet part.

Not sure if you have to Extract Parts to get to the clarinet part for printing; I can't remember when Dynamic Parts were introduced.

Copy and paste all the trombone music into the clarinet stave. The transposition will be correct.

Tho' the trombone part might be too low for clarinet. It may be necessary to transpose it all an octave higher after pasting (triple klik the staff, then ctrl/UpArrow).

Adrian/ Chris
Thank you so much for this. I’d trawled the manual for ages but couldn’t find any reference to tenor clef anywhere. The ‘q’ trick is a new one on me and is just the job!
I can now confess that my first attempt failed because in my ignorance I originally created a viola staff and only realised after I’d copied and pasted into the clarinet part that it was wrong. Must use the proper spectacles when doing this sort of thing in future!
Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my query. I’m really grateful.
Kind regards
Richard

For Clefs, see the Sibelius 6 Reference, section "2.11 Clefs" on page 118.

I'm not surprised, Richard. It's much quicker and easier to find an answer to sibelius in google than in the sib manual. Type "how change clef in sib" into google and the answer comes straight up. Type "how change clef" into sib-ref-find and you are told "No matches were found".

The Ctrl-F search function in a PDF document is very literal. You have to choose the precise word or phrase to search for. not ask a question. A Google search is a bit more fuzzy.

Search the Sibelius manual for 'how change clef' and nothing will come up. But 'clef change' finds something useful. And don't forget the traditional Table of Contents. Once you've realised that clefs are going to be in the Notations chapter, it won't take long to find the Creating Clef Changes section.

My example is from the current Sibelius manual. But the principle stands for the Sibelius 6 one.

I tend to use the Google approach too, Adrian. The downside is that the answers are often found buried inside really interesting threads and I spend far too much time reading them!

Hello, dear ones!

I'm transcribing a Bach chorus using C clefs for soprano, contralto and tenor, as in the original. It turns out that the tenor clef (c clef in the fourth line) is sounding an octave below the real sound. How can I solve this problem?

Attentiosmante,

Paulo Sérgio.

> It turns out that the tenor clef (c clef in the fourth line) is sounding an octave below the real sound.

It is not the tenor clef which is sounding an octave below.

It is the chosen instrument (tenor singer) which is configured to sound an octave below written.

To correct that, re-configure the transposition for the Tenor Singer instrument.

In the attached, change 'Written middle C sounds as C4' rather than C3.
