deleting older version of Sibelius?
Posted by - 17 Sep 10:47PM
Hi there, I just updated my Sibelius Ultimate v2020.9, plus the Ultimate Sounds 2020, a big one: 26GB.
I have 2 questions:
1)
I saved all the versions of Sibelius, from version 6 on, because I was not sure if later updates needed the previous versions (because of serial codes, + whatever). I also saved all my Ultimates from v2018-7 on, for the same reason. Can somebody tell me if I indeed have to keep all these versions (almost 125GB now!) or can I delete them, at least the ones before Ultimate?

2)
Within the running Ultimate, under Playback Configurations, can I safely delete the 'Sibelius 7 Sounds' (+Chamber + Jazz + Lite) and keep only the Ultimate, MIDI and NotePerformer? If so, can I delete them then from the 'Playback Configuration map/folder inside the Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius/ ?

Hope somebody out there can send me an reliable advise!. Thanks in advance!

best regards,

There is no such thing as "Ultimate Sounds 2020". The current "Sibelius Sounds" sample library (as supplied for Sibelius Ultimate) is unchanged from earlier versions called "Sibelius 7 Sounds". It is just a change of name, not of content.

Distinguish carefully whether you are asking about the Installers for earlier versions, or whether you are asking about the installed applications themselves.

It is useful to retain Installers for the currently-installed products, in case you have to re-install after some incident, but the Installers do not have to be retained on the system disk: they could be stored on an external disk, or a USB memory stick.

There is no point in retaining Installers for obsolete versions of Sibelius (unless you are creating a museum).

You are at liberty to retain old versions of the Sibelius.app bundle in Applications, but they are not required for any upgrade or licencing purpose.

No, that would be a terribly destructive thing to do.

I do not understand what you mean by "Ultimate" in this context. There is no such named Playback Configuration shipped with Sibelius. If "Ultimate" is a Playback Configuration that you have created, then you are at liberty to delete it again.

You will not find any of the shipping Playback Configurations at that location. That location contains only custom Playback Configurations that you have previously created.

I point of clarification for those of use that go back far enough, ...

The Sibelius Sounds as supplied by for Sibelius Ultimate *does* contain the Bass Clarinet fix (missing in the earliest S7S) doesn't it? I just reinstalled Sibelius following a clean reinstall of Win 10 and didn't bother to manually add the base clarinet patch (which I've saved since 2015 just in case).

Yes, it does, but anyone with an earlier version of the Sibelius Sounds sample library already installed can easily update it to the latest level by installing the very much smaller "Sibelius Sounds Updater" from their "My Avid" account. There's no need to download all 23GB of the full sample library just to get the updated items.

It's not clear to me exactly when the version of the Sibelius Sounds sample library that included the Bass Clarinet fix was actually posted for download. Inspection of the download reveals that it was built at the end of June 2016. But when it reached the download servers I don't know. But the chances are that every new Sibelius user for the last 4 years already has the Bass Clarinet fix, whatever the brand name of the library was or is.
