Portato playback

Is it possible to make playback of portato more nuanced? In the attached (3rd bar) the notes are almost staccato.

Thanks.

My Oxford dictionary of music says portato or portando or portamento means play w'out gaps, so the staccato marks actually break the rule. As a brass player, I would play it as soft tongue, but that's how we trombonists play legato anyway. I suggest, if you need the notes to be played longer, switch on Live Playback and adjust the value of Live Duration in the Inspector.

P.S. I see that portato & portamento are listed in the Playback dictionary under staff text, so maybe you could try typing it in Technique text and hide it if you prefer.

PPS. Forgive me for being nosy, but I'm wondering how or why your concert pitch score is in 4 flats, yet your transposed alto sax part is in 2 sharps.

That worked! Thank you.

You're absolutely right about the key signature. The attachment was just a sample I'd chopped out from the actual piece and obviously managed to mess up somewhere along the way. The alto sax transposes down a Major 6th, so concert pitch for two sharps is one flat.

Thanks again.

Dave

You say por-tay-to and I say por-tah-to.

Sorry. This thread has made me hungry.

Hi David. I didn't actually know that you could change the key sig in a dynamic part w'out affecting that in the score. My new knowledge could come in handy one day (if I remember it). ;-)

The alto sax transposes down a Major 6th

Many years ago there was a standing joke about Jimmy Lally, famous arranger of stock charts in London's Tin Pan Alley. Every morning, he would come to his office, open the top draw of his desk, peer inside and close it again, then get to work on his latest project. One of his coworkers was curious and came to the office early next day to see what was hidden in Jimmy's desk drawer. It was a sheet of paper on which was written "Trumpets up a tone, altos up a 6th".
