Zoom conferencing vs. Sibelius - a new problem?
Posted by Patrick O'Keefe - 13 Sep 04:32AM
This past week I ran into a problem with Zoom that I have not seen reported here nor run into before.

The environment is Windows 10 2004 and either Sib 7.5 or Sib 2020.6. My Zoom is currently 5.2.3, but the problem also happened with 5.2.1.

When in a Zoom conference (as a participant, not a host)if I start Sibelius, or if I bring already running Sibelius to the foreground, I loose audio from the conference host. (Since we are the only 2 on the conference I don't know if I would also loose other participant's audio.) The host can still hear me. I can get the Zoom audio back by switching the conference audio away from the active audio device and back.

This loosing the audio *may* happen only if Sibelius is using ASIO4All or WASAPI - ASIO4All for sure; I'm less certain about WASAPI.

If I am screen sharing Sibelius (with sound) Sibelius has to use either DS or MME audio engines or the conference host cannot hear Sibelius. I assume that is expected, but I don't remember it happening a couple weeks ago.

As I said, this is a new problem that I had not seen before last week. The only thing I did (that I'm aware of) is install drivers for a microphone. Just to be sure, I uninstalled those drivers but the problem remains.

Does this sound familiar to anybody?

This is to be expected.

If any application is using an ASIO or WASAPI interface to an audio output device, then no other application can use that audio output device.

It is possible for Zoom to lose audio when Sibelius is launched even when Sibelius is using other classes of device, but it is easy to restore audio from within Zoom Preferences.

Thank you.
I have no idea if any other application use ASIO or WASAPI (and don't know how to find out). I'm pretty sure that is not part of this particular problem because the Zoom audio can be restored. That wouldn't be the case if both Sibelius and Zoom were using WASAPI or both using ASIO.

But that's irrelevant anyway. I need Zoom to be able to capture Sibelius output through screen sharing, and Zoom apparently cannot capture Sibelius output that goes through ASIO or WASAPI. I need to switch to DS or MME when I'm going to share Sibelius in Zoom.

Sibelius, when using ASIO or WASAPI also disrupts the audio from the VLC Media Player but not (for instance) from my browser playing a Youtube video. I guess I need to do more reasearch on how this all fits together.

According to the Scoring Notes article found at https://www.scoringnotes.com/tips/share-video-and-audio-of-music-notation-software-via-zoom/, one can use the audio interface ZoomAudioDevice to share ones audio from Sibelius using Zoom. However, the article doesn’t seem to explain how to actually get this option to appear in the audio interface (Audio Engine Options > Audio Interface > Interface). I have the latest version of Zoom Pro installed, but in my setup, I only find the following choices available: ASIO4ALL, WASAPI, DS, and MME.

That may be a Mac specific reference.

Ah, yes. It appears that it is a Mac specific reference. Thanks, Patrick.
