I thought I had dispatched the Timeline years ago, but it has suddenly reappeared every time I open a score, even though I never have it open when working.
I have gone through all the procedures mentioned in previous posts, as well as those mentioned in Scoring Notes and the Avid Knowledge Base, but to no avail.
I have no idea what I could have done to re-invoke this most unwelcome beast!
I have no idea what timeline is useful for, but I suppose that if you close it, then go to Preferences/Display and check 'Set Custom View Options', then save before closing, it should stay away forever.
I have tried your suggested sequence, along with every other combination and order of application I can think of, but while the Timeline remains hidden when various files are opened and closed DURING the session when the options were set, it returns when Sib is restarted.
I just wish I could remember what I have done recently to allow the Timeline to reappear!
Thanks for taking the time (pardon the pun) to reply.
Thanks for your reply Robert. This is one of the many things I have tried, but to no avail. I wondered if my recent files had become corrupted, but even very old scores open with the Timeline even though I have NEVER deliberately chosen to use it.
Have you done ALL of the following AT THE SAME TIME?
1. Turn off timeline in view-->invisibles
2. In File-->Preferences-->Display, choose the settings shown in the first image.
3. Then follow up with the selections in the second image.

I actually have a copy of these same instructions you posted years ago! I have again followed them to the letter but without success.
What is interesting, though, is that when the Timeline appears unbidden, the Timeline entry in View is sometimes still unchecked. Something other than the opened score seems to be triggering the Timeline.
I'm tempted to reset my Preferences to default to see if that helps, but the thought of setting everything up again outweighs my annoyance at the Timeline.
Here's an odd thought...
Make sure everything is setup as in my images.
Close sib
Change the setting in image 1 to view options saved in score. Close down the dialog. Close Sib. Reopen sib and open a file. check that view-->timeline is unticked.
Change the setting back. Ok out of the dialog again and close sib.
Try it with the other dialog and see if that works. Just make sure to click the [set custom view] and/or [set custom size and position] buttons after each change.
See if that made a difference. I know it's a rigmarole but it may well solve the problem. There are certain things in sib that can be resolved by changing a setting and then changing it back again.

Mike, I really appreciate the time and effort you have taken to make these suggestions. I have tried them over and over, in different orders and with different files, but the Timeline insists upon appearing.
None of these issues has arisen for however many years it has been since I successfully followed your original instructions.
The changes work within a session, but once I shut down Sib and restart the changes are lost.
I wondered about at which point in the procedure the file should be saved. I tried saving immediately after unticking the Timeline and also after changing the preferences. I also made a minor change to the notation in the file as well as unticking the View item and then saving the file. However, it made no difference.
At which point of the process should I be saving?
Also, I noticed once again that sometimes the Timeline appeared in a score but the View box was unticked.
Another thing that puzzles me is that since I do not usually use the Quick Start, Sib presents me with an untitled blank score with a Timeline present on start-up, again with an unwanted Timeline.
I might try copying a score over onto a new score and seeing if the problem has to do with something embedded in the original file.
Are you starting with one of your own Manuscript papers/templates or with one of the defaults?
I always use the quickstart and never have these kinds of problems.
However, I think the timeline setting is a global one, not a score by score one. You shouldn't have to save anything, unless you are saving or exporting a manuscript paper/template.
Just for the craic, set up the quickstart (Fil-->Prefs--Other) and restart sib. Choose a MSS that you KNOW is different from your standard one. Do you still get the timeliine?

I think I might have things working correctly again, but I'll be more confident after a few days of use.
What I discovered is that you can tick a panel in the View menu and then click on "Hide All" and the ticked item remains visible. So I have kept the Keypad in view as I like to do, unticked the Timeline and then clicked on "Hide All" and only the Keypad remains visible. I'm not sure that this is the expected behaviour of "Hide All" but it works for me! Maybe the developers did in fact take "Hide All" to mean "hide everything that isn't ticked". Or it could be that there is still something awry in my installation. After that I made the usual selections in the Display and Files sections of the Preferences.
I have opened and closed a range of files, restarted, opened and closed them again and so far so good: no unwanted Timeline. I have also tried your idea of opening MSS I don't usually use and they have all opened without the Timeline.
Too good to be true. The "Hide All" fix was an anomoly which disappeared once I ticked another panel on the View menu.
It seems the Preference selections for Display and Files are simply not holding beyond the current session. Other Preferences can be changed successfully, however.
My new best friend is Ctrl+Alt+N. Life is too short!
Mike, if I open a new score the display preferences I have set now hold. They didn't when you last suggested I try, but maybe the hammering I have given the Preferences has achieved at least this much!

After several days of intensive usage I can report that the Timeline is now back to its expected behaviour. I'm afraid, however, that I cannot pinpoint the specific remedy because so many things were tried in so many different sequences.
