Sib. 7.1.3: getting tempo to be reflected in play back
Posted by kj4321 - 30 Jun 12:24AM (edited 30 Jun 01:01AM)
I've been trying this over the years, with difficulty. I actually have to submit a Sibelius score now. (I usually do the last step in a DAW). Is it a matter of syntax? I follow instructions: click the bar, choose text style, metronome mark...but how exactly do I type it? From the pull down menu, I select the note value. But then what? = sign, and then type in the tempo number value? When I'm using the transport window, which I use constantly to check my work, it never registers the typed in tempo value. thanks!

And when I produce a midi file, the tempo appears above every measure! Good grief.

Yes. Metronome Mark text style. Enter the note value, space, '=', space, then a b.p.m. number. Then press ESC to leave.

If it is not working, please attach the Sibelius .sib score here, so that we can see what is wrong.

If you want sib to recognise tempo/MM properly, you need to turn off live playback. If Live Tempo is on then sib will follow the 'ebb and flow' of tempo changes as the piece was played in.

If Sib's interpretation feature is also on (espressivo) then sib will make semi-random changes to the tempo in an attempt to imitate a real player.

A typical classical score will contain few actual tempo changes (one at the start, an occasional rall rit or accel (which will create many tempo changes in the MIDI file.)) There may be sections within the music at a slightly slower or quicker tempo and so on.

I haven't used MIDI for a number of years, but I don't remember it including tempo for every note.

Is this project the result of you playing the music in through a keyboard/guitar (thus ending up with a mass of live data), or using notation?

Have you read the manual? Do you know anything about how music notation works? A tempo change usually consists of a tempo word (Allegro/Adagio/Moderato etc.) followed (sometimes but by no means always) by a note (usually the beat note) followed by [space]=[space]and the number of beats per minute. Sometimes (as in the image) this is in brackets. This is all in a single text object. Personally, I prefer to use tempo text, rather than MM. I reserve MM text exclusively for metric modulations.

As for the MIDI messages you see, are you sure they are ALL tempo changes?

I also noticed that when you export a score as a MIDI file, and then import it back in to reopen as a score, in the new score there is a tempo mark on every bar even if no change. And chord symbols are lost. And all sorts of other notation anomalies. I'd never recommend MIDI export with a view to re-import. Obviously XML is better, though still not perfect.

==============================================
Check that the tempo slider at bottom-right of your transport panel is centred, and check that the score position slider is not positioned in a pause measure. IMHO, Once fixed, it is better not to mess with this panel. I personally have no use for it.
