Sib. Student: PDF Exporting & Key Signatures
Posted by Clarinet1 - 23 Jun 11:34PM
Hello all

I wonder if someone can help me. I am new to Sibelius, having used Finale for 20 years. I am very glad I changed as Sibelius is so much more intuitive!

Anyhow, I am trying to export a clarinet quintet to PDF. It does that just fine but I must have selected something without knowing it as when it exports over to PDF, the score comes out as the correct key signature of B minor but transposes it in to C# minor on the parts. I know my instrument is a transposing one, but I need it to read B minor on both score and parts. I'm sure I am being stupid but can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong? I have attached the exported version. I am using Sibelius Ultimate 2020.6 on a Macbook Pro with High Sierra OS. Many thanks in advance

Kind regards

Claire

Though you can invoke the option to have a non-transposing score (as it seems that you have), parts are transposing by default. So you haven't "selected something without knowing it" and there is nowhere you have "gone wrong".

It's hard to imagine a situation when a player of a Clarinet in Bb (or in A or Eb) would want to read from a non-transposed part, but if that's what you really want, you will have change the clarinets to be "Clarinet in C".

It is an available instrument: so, with nothing selected, invoke an "Instrument Change", choose "Clarinet in C" from the instrument list, and when you get the blue active cursor click to the left of the beginning of the stave, and the whole stave will change to "Clarinet in C".

You'll have to so this for each stave in turn (assuming by clarinet quintet you mean 5 clarinets, not clarinet plus string quartet). You can double click and edit the name if you don't want to show "in C", but the result will be non-transposed parts which you (for some strange reason) want (even though you say you are playing a transposing clarinet).

P.S. if you DO still want a transposed part, but just don't want to see the C# minor KEY SIGNATURE you can choose Open Key/Atonal as the key signature, and you won't see ANY key signature at all.

But if you really do want to see the B minor key signature in both the score and parts, you will will have to write for the non-transposing Clarinet in C, and have non-transposed parts.

I think it's just a case of mistaken transposition.

If you are just transcribing a clarinet part (and no other instruments are involved) just export the score to PDF. Do all the layout on the score and don't worry about the transposition.

Hi both,

Thanks for your replies :)

Mark: clarinet ensemble scores are usually printed without transposed parts, so the key signature you see on the clarinet quintet score will be the same as on the parts. (At least, this is the case with every ensemble piece I have ever bought or played!)

Mike: It's strange as I don't remember pressing the transpose button at all. So does this mean that all people who are arranging music for 3 or 5 transposing instruments of the same kind have this problem each time they do an arrangement? It seems odd.

Hi guys

I've realised what it was. 'Transposing Score' has to be selected from the beginning, which I hadn't realised. All sorted.

Thanks

You didn't attach anything in your first post, Claire, but I'm assuming you want your Bb clarinet parts to be in B minor, which means your non-transposed score would be in A minor. So transpose your non-transposed score down a maj.2nd. Then if you want to print your score in B minor, switch it to transposed score. Your dynamic parts should automatically transpose by default.

Ah, I see Claire. What you really wanted was a transposed SCORE, so the score and parts then have the same key signature. You didn't want LITERALLY non-transposed parts as you seemed to say, which would only work for Clarinet in C.

Yes, press Transposing Score. But didn't your score go to C# minor just like the parts when you did that? Like Adrian said, I imagine you need to transpose down a tone as well?

>>"Mark: clarinet ensemble scores are usually printed without transposed parts, so the key signature you see on the clarinet quintet score will be the same as on the parts. "

This really should be stated as: clarinet quintet scores are printed with transposed score AND parts both (not "without transposed parts"). And that's the way they end up agreeing on key signature.

Adrian: Yes, sorry, I thought it had attached it but not so!
Yes, I ended up transposing it down a major 2nd and all was fine. Will make sure I start all my clarinet ensemble arrangements with 'Transposing Score' selected in future!

Mark: Yes, sorry I probably phrased it wrong; 'transposed score and parts' does make much more sense!

Thanks for all your input everyone :)
