Accidentals in plain text
Posted by dctguitarist - 22 Jun 07:16PM
I used to type accidentals in plain text with as described on p440 of manual. In Sibelius Ultimate, this no longer seems to work. Control plus number just gives me the number. Any help? Thanks.

Is that Plain Staff Text, or Plain System Text?

I don't think accidentals have ever been available in Plain Text styles. They are available in, for instance, in Technique Text, by holding down Ctrl and using 7, 8, or 9 from the numeric keypad.

With Plain Staff Text. I have done this for years with previous versions of Sibelius using control and 7, 8, or 9. I make educational documents for teaching music theory and have used this function extensively. Now suddenly it no longer works.

If you want accidentals in Plain Staff Text, then you will have to reconfigure the Text Style for Plain Text so that "Word Menu" is "Symbols" instead of "Tempo words"

Got it. Thanks. When I upgraded, it must have defaulted to tempo words.

Along with the inclusion of wildcards in some text styles. You can define entries in the word list, if you prefer.

I'm wanting to create the "flat" symbol on chords like B flat but Sibelius only writes the word or the number 9.

I see from the above suggestions that I need to "reconfigure the Text Style for Plain Text so that "Word Menu" is "Symbols" instead of "Tempo words". I am following this instruction in the word menu but it isn't working as expected.

Please tell me what I'm doing incorrectly. Thank you!

Just add the symbol to the word list:

File-->Preferences-->Word Menus. There is no menu for "Plain Text"!

So create a new one.

The existing text style for plain text should already be set to symbols

The instructions were for a user who was trying to enter text in style "Plain Text". If you are trying to enter text in a different text style, then you need to re-configure the appropriate Text Style Definition, which will not be "Plain Text".

In the special case of chord entry, you obtain the flat sign by typing a lower-case 'b'.

If you're using the Roman numeral tool, you have to type the numbers on the alpha-numeric keypad, not the number keypad. If you are using the Chord tool, I don't remember which, but try both keypads and see if one of them works.

You can type "Bb" in Technique or Plain Text, select the "b" part, goto Text/Format/CharacterStyle, select MusicText. You now have the flat character. Same deal to change the hash character to a sharp.
