Audio Engine Error: Bad Parameters Posted by Katjh - 30 Mar 12:25PM Hide picture Had this error for over a month, and spent hours following every suggestion Google could find for me. Have finally given up, come here and created a logon so I could post this and hope for salvation. After overcoming a bunch of other issues that required assorted fiddlings I somewhat lost track of, I now get the Audio Engine Error: Bad Parameters message on startup. I have the standard set of issues after that: can only play General MIDI; the Audio Engine Options window has almost all options greyed out; and the Repair button looks like it might work, but nothing happens when I click on it. You have to quit Sibelius before taking a copy of the PlogueEngine log, otherwise the full log is not written to disk. In Device Manager, do not look at "Audio inputs and outputs": look under "Sound, video and game controllers", and especially investigate the the device driver date and version number for all sound output devices listed there. Do not trust the Windows "Update driver" feature: always go to the support site of the appropriate manufacturer for driver updates. I am puzzled that the PC has the "Realtek ASIO" driver installed, but no sign of Realtek audio devices in Device Manager. Realtek ASIO: I had Stereo Mix Realtek Audio listed as Disabled on my "Manage sound devices" window, which may be why the Realtek driver is installed. I played with these and several other settings over the last month while trying to fix things. Device Manager: I haven't managed to find any relevant drivers to update. PlogueEngine: Even double-checking via Task Manager that all things Avid/Sibelius are closed doesn't give much more in the log. Then I checked the computer manufacturer's site and found exactly the right driver which, after downloading and opening turned out to be exactly the version I already had. If you are prepared to lose all your customised Sibelius Preferences and revert to defaults, then do this: - ensure that Sibelius is fully quit, and not even running in the background; - right-click Start, select "Windows Powershell" (not the Admin version); - copy and paste precisely this (all on one line) into the command line: reg delete HKCU\Software\Avid\Sibelius\Preferences - you could also delete the "PlogueEngine" folder from the User Editable Files area again at the same time. - now try launching Sibelius. -- Sibelius 2020.1/7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 2020.1, Windows 10 64-bit 16GB. The only things that might be considered "different" in your installation are the "SteelSeries H Wireless" driver, and the "Dell AC511 USB SoundBar" driver. Could you try uninstalling the software for those items, and see whether Sibelius launches without them? I'm a little too cowardly to uninstall them completely - functioning sound is more important to me than decent sound in Sibelius at the moment with all the virtual comms required in these delightful times. I know reinstalling them *should* be easy...but then, this problem shouldn't have occurred in the first place, so I'm wussing out, sorry! Thanks for your attention and suggestions, Robin. Even though it's not fixed, I'm still very grateful for your help. I will now learn to love basic midi sounds until I get up the courage to uninstall my drivers. And then do a complete rebuild when that doesn't work either. At least I know I probably haven't overlooked an easy fix. Oh, one more question: do you know of any documentation anywhere that explains how this side of Sibelius works, that could maybe help me understand how it's meant to fit together, and then even-more-maybe work out how to fix it for myself? For a start, I'd love to understand more about what the PlogueEngine is doing, as reflected in the log file. Ah well, back to the boop-boop music. Back to top | All threads
