Sib. 2018.x: Inputting violin chords, playing back unwritten harmonics
Posted by Marilyn - 20 Mar 06:24PM
The piece I'm working on at the moment, I am inputting normal 2-part chords in the violin part in a low tessitura, but in playback, some invisible high-pitched harmonics can be heard. How is this happening? And how can I avoid it?

Also, how can I upgrade to a 2019 version of Sibelius Ultimate?

These are the violin chords which are producing harmonics in playback.

For answers to playback problems, please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the issue, and tell us what Playback Configuration is in effect.

2019.x versions of Sibelius are no longer available. The current version is 2020.1.

If you are a monthly-paid subscription user, or a perpetual licence user with an in-date Support & Update plan, then updates are regularly available via Avid Link.

If you have a perpetual licence, but the Support & Update plan has expired, then with effect from 1 January 2020, you can no longer buy your way back in to a Support & Update plan. You will need to cross-grade to a Subscription Licence (with a discount on the first two years of subscription) to obtain any further updates.

Hi.
Extract was attached to my last post. The configuration is Noteperformer.

No, there has not been any Sibelius .sib score file attached to this thread. Screen-shots are no use for playback problems.

I've solved the problem. I had written "harmonics" just for my own information above a previous violin passage, not realising that actually created harmonics. (I was meaning to go back and figure out how to write the notes as harmonics.) So harmonics were created just by writing the word "harmonics", but I don't know how to cancel it out. How would you stop the harmonics sounding after the harmonics passage?

So, you have established your problem is caused by the word "harmonic" affecting playback. So either delete that word (since you say it is there for your own information only) or if you want to leave it there, turn off (untick) "Play on Pass" for that word in Properties/Inspector, which will stop that word having any effect on playback.

I'm forming chords the normal way - with shift+3 to add a note underneath, or just the 3 to add a 3rd on top. It's only in the violin part that this creates a harmonic.

Yes, if you have written "harmonic" above the note, adding a 3rd will produce a playback of a 17th or 19th above the lower note depending on whether the written interval is a major or minor 3rd, but I seem to remember, you don't understand intervals in music. Your playback dictionary is picking up on the "harmonic" word. Playback will only respond to this on string instruments or guitars (I think). Why have you written "harmonic"? If you don't want a harmonic to sound, as Mark has already mentioned, either delete it or kill Play on Pass.

Adrian Drover: What do you mean by:
"...but I seem to remember, you don't understand intervals in music"?????

My apologies, Marilyn, I had you mixed up with someone else on another similar thread concerned with adding notes to existing chords. I'm sure your understanding of intervals is excellent. Sorry again.
BTW. There is a good plugin under Play/Plugins/Harmonics for creating such.
