Hi guys with Apple!

Is it advisable to upgrade to Catalina already? Any feedback on good or so so performance with Sibelius?

I appreciate your comments!

No, stay away from Catalina for the next couple of months, and turn off auto-update, until you absolutely 100% sure that it will work with all your hardware and software.

Before you upgrade, check each and every piece of software and equipment and verify that it's compatible with Catalina, or you may be in for unpleasant surprises.

Makes me glad I didn't go down the Mac route when I got a new computer a while back.

The Mac world is certainly not a good place to be for people who like to hang on to old versions of their favourite software!

Hi all
I'm not encouraging anybody to upgrade, but I just downloaded Catalina this afternoon. Must say that everything is going smoothly as usual with Sibelius and Note Performer. Nothing abnormal to report.

As for as for Mac OS only supporting 64 bits software, well I guess we have to move on. When I installed Catalina, it gave me a list of all my software that wasn't compatible anymore. Anyway I was prepared and had only 2 that I hadn't used in years. It's personal, but I get attached to software that evolves.

I also have a windows 10 laptop for other type of works. Over the years I accumulated loads of windows software that I just can't install anymore on windows 10. Didn't I hear that Windows 7 won't be updated anymore end of January 2020 ? So I guess in it's own way, Microsoft is also moving forward.

I still run my Christmas Card mailing list from Microsoft Works 1999 on Windows 10. It sometimes takes some futzing around to get older software to run, but I can often do it.

Software and OS versions on Windows get updated and are no longer supported. I did see something a while ago about Microsoft putting out critical security patches for Windows XP even though it is long out of service (though surprisingly commonly still used). Microsoft has long had a policy of trying to keep older software running as long as possible.

Typically Sibelius and most other applications will only support and update their most recent versions, but you can often get unsupported software to run at your own risk, of course.

In the case of Catalina, only 64 bit code will run, so that pretty much puts a hard stop on any software that uses 32-bit components, even if the bulk of the code is 64 bit.

A lot of the changes like this are for security reasons, and I can certainly appreciate Apple wanting to shut out leaky software. Kind of a pain for all the Mac users who have been holding on to Sib 6 and 7, though.

Hi Bob. "hanging on to Sib 6 and 7"? In face of my waiting for Catalina compatible updates on 7 or a relaease of 8, this comment doesn't make sense to me. Unless I'm missing something, 7 is the latest version of Sibelius so no one is hanging on to it, unless you are suggesting we abandon it for Finale or something else. Or am I confused, is there already a later version of Sibelius that works now with Catalina? That's not what I'm reading online.

Where did you get that idea? Sibelius 7 and 8 are practically ancient history.

I can't get any sound from Sibelius Ultimate after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.6. Are there plans to fix this problem in the works?

There is no such problem known with Catalina.

If you are having problems with playback, you should start a thread of your own, and post screen-shots of "Playback Devices", and "Audio Engine Options", and tell us the brand and model of audio output interface in use.

Hi all - I've gotten nowhere with Avid support - after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.7 (necessary for other software my business uses), I can't open Sibelius and it's behaving quite oddly. Am I correct that this is update-related?

Sibelius will not open without error. I have a full Ultimate license for 2020.9 and have fully updated. For some reason, the system attempts to open Sibelius First, which I have never had. It starts with a popup window: "Sib has detected a problem with your product activation. Your copy of Sibelius now needs to be manually deactivated and reactivated..." then when I click OK, another window: "You need to sign up to Sibelius | First to unlock the editing features. Please register...." I am signed in to AvidLink.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

That is what you need to do: de-activate, then re-activate.

Pull down the Apple menu and select "Restart".
After the restart, don't launch Sibelius.
Open Avid Link directly, and use Avid Link to de-activate Sibelius, then re-activate Sibelius.
When re-activation has completed, then try launching Sibelius.

Thank you, Robin. I ended up having to resolve this issue with the assistance of Avid support, and I wanted to record the details here in case it would help anyone else.

The basic issue was this: I got a new iMac then used Migration Assistant which brought over apps and data from old to new computer. Avid Link saw the wrong Device registration and this conflicted with the license registration. There was no way for me to fix this - and in fact, I had to do a remote session with Avid and it took a 20-minute session for them to remove all traces of the previous registration then relink.
