Sib. 7.5: slow response time
Posted by Graham L - 14 Oct 10:24AM
I've been using Sibelius for over 20 years and on a variety of PCs, and it's always worked really well, no problems! A while ago I invested in a fast computer that was built for me including two SSDs; the computer is great, everything is much quicker, except Sibelius, which is much much slower, especially with larger scores. I've looked at articles about speeding Sibelius up but that hasn't helped. There seems to be enough RAM, and I'm running Windows 10.

Any ideas to speed things up? I use Sibelius for many hours a day and it's currently slowing my life up.

What is the native resolution of the display? Does the display have a Windows scaling factor larger than than 100%?

What playback configuration are you using? Does the use of Sibelius speed up during editing if you select playback configuration "General MIDI (Basic)"?

Aha! The resolution was the 'recommended' 1920x1080, but when I tried other ones it seemed to pretty much solve the problem! Would this make sense? It seems to vary a little bit between different resolutions and perhaps I just need to experiment to find the right one.

Coming back to it today I'm not sure that it's right yet. Some things speed up with a different resolution, others don't. I've not been using the Sibelius soundsets - for a while I tried Vienna Symphonic Library and now use Noteperformer. Both of these worked fine on my previous computer. If I switch to Sibelius general midi basic that speeds things up. I don't know what all that means in terms of trying to get everything to speed?!

If Sibelius speeds up when playback configuration "General MIDI (Basic)" is chosen, then this implies that it is likely that the slow responses when other playback configurations are in use are caused by evaluating the sounds to be played for each note in the score and processing the information in the SoundSet file.

A possible work-around is to use playback configuration "General MIDI (Basic)" throughout all music input, editing, and layout, and only use the intended playback configuration for playback and auditioning.

Thanks very much for your helpful replies Robin! That is a possible solution. I'm just a bit baffled as to why Sibelius has always worked perfectly on all my ordinary computers, and when I get a more advanced and fast computer Sibelius is suddenly slow. All the Sibelius software/sound files are stored on an SSD that is not far off full capacity, would that make a difference?

Although you say there seems to be enough RAM, you haven't actually said how much. You should have 8GB as an absolute minimum.

By 'Sibelius 7.5' may we assume you mean 'Sibelius 7.5.1'?

Have you tried the demo of the current Sibelius version?

Tell us more about your new computer?

Sibelius is a single-threaded application throughout, apart from playback by VST plug-ins.

This means that the multi-processor-core features of modern CPUs count for nothing with Sibelius: only one core will ever be used during Sibelius note-entry and editing.

Your old PC might have had a CPU with an extremely high clock rate, which made Sibelius go fast. Modern CPUs tend to have a somewhat more modest clock-rate, but multiple cores.

Other things to check are the possible undesirable effects of using an anti-virus or anti-malware application. Whether you use the built-in Windows Defender, or a third-party anti-virus, make sure that you:
- define a process exception for Sibelius.exe;
- define a file/folder exception for the whole of the Sibelius Sounds sample library.
You really do not want any anti-virus activity inside Sibelius.

Thanks so much for all the helpful replies!

I'm looking at the possibility that Norton may be getting in the way and have followed your advice, Robin.

I only have 8GB of RAM, so that's a good point Mike, I'll get more anyway.

And, Laurence, yes it's 7.5.1. If all else fails I'll try a demo of the recent Sibelius. What else would I need to tell you about my computer?

One other thing I wonder about - currently the Avid software is stored on the C Drive, but the scores are in a documents folder on another drive. Would this affect things?

No.

But you might like to check that Windows is putting its swapfile on one of your SSDs and not a slow hard disk.
