Sib. 7.1.3: Can't find or initialise PlogueEngine.dll/bundle
Posted by doccrispy - 29 Sep 12:06PM
Running Sib 7.1.3 happily for several years.
Currently on MacOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan)
Suddenly Get an error at startup (at Initializing playback system stage)
Can't find or initialise PlogueEngine.dll/bundle
Click OK on dialog, and Sibelius does start up (plays the start up music - although assume this is pre-recorded) but no Sound in application.

After much fiddling completely uninstalled everything even remotely AVID SIBELIUS related on my system that I could find, and reinstalled from scratch.
Did this once from 7.1.2 disks and updatingto 7.1.3 without success
and now using the 7.1.3 installer available here - https://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/updates/sib7_1_3.html
and installed all the sounds (plus did the 7.1.2 sounds update.

Neither approach has worked. Error message as above and no sound configurations are available. On the playback configurations page I have no configurations showing at all. Have tried checking/unchecking the virtual instruments option box as well as rescanning/repairing. all to no avail.

Have checked many threads about problems with PlogueEngine here. They all seem to end without any resolution. Has anybody ever got their system working after such an error and if so what steps did you take. Any help or guidance would be very gratefully received.
Thank you.

Re-installing Sibelius is not helpful for this problem.

On what date, precisely, was this problem first seen?

Does this Mac have Google Updater (Google Keystone) installed as a hidden automatically starting process? Has this Mac had ANY Google software installed at any time in the past or present?

Is any other software in the Mac mis-behaving?

It was definitely working until 15th September (last time I successfully used it). I noticed it had stopped working on Friday 27th September.

Yes I do have google chrome and various other bits of google s/w installed and it appears that Keystone is installed.

I have not noticed any other s/w misbehaving, but I don't really use it for much apart from browsing/email/music score prep.

Could you check the version number (and the dates of creation and last modification) of Keystone that is installed in your Mac.

It was the 1.2.13.75 version of Google Keystone. Google have acknowledged that that update caused quite widespread problems including filesystem corruption (not just for AVID video product users who seemed to be among the first to spot the problem). They originally recommended a series of terminal commands to fix it, but they've since updated their recommendation to recover macOS from macOS recovery (see https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/15235262?hl=en). I decided to instead revert to the last known working time machine backup (which was the 15th sep). It is now working, and Google have suspended the problemmatic version of Keystone.
Thank you Robin for pointing me in the right direction.

Great, that's good to know.

Just for completeness, could you post the date of last modification and date of creation of the Google "Keystone" updater? Some curious minds would like to know when this updater was made by Google.

Sorry, that’s a bit tricky now I’ve skipped back to a prior time machine backup - it’s overwritten the log. However, From my quick scan round the net it looks like the first to notice the problem were in Hollywood on Monday 23rd.
Additionally I can’t definitively say it was the google keystone problem that was my problem- all I’ve done to fix it was revert to a known working timestamp. My machine was displaying no other symptoms - others affected by the keystone bug couldn’t even start their machines. However it does seem like massively coincidental timing. If my copy of Sibelius starts having problems despite google suspending the offending update, I’ll be back. But in the meantime all is good. Cheers!

I have exactly the same problem. I had Google Chrome for att short while but un-installed it. I've searched my computer and can't find anything like a google updater. What could cause this problem?

My computer is Mac with OSX Sierra 10.12.6 and Sib version 2018.7

The Google Updater, which didn't get removed when you removed Chrome. It's well-hidden.

OK I don't think it's anything to do with Google updater.
Having definitely confirmed sibelius was working correctly yesterday it stopped working about half an hour ago, and I am definitely not running the version of Google Keystone in question
Here are the last few lines of my com.google.Keystone.Agent.plist in ~/Library:
lastCheck-user-1.2.13.41
2019-09-30T21:47:45Z
lastCheckStartDate
2019-09-30T21:46:00Z
lastServerCheckDate
2019-09-30T21:47:44Z

So it's running the earlier 1.2.13.41 (not 1.2.13.75)

However I do have a prime suspect.
Earlier this evening I ran Sibelius with no problems.
I then ran iTunes which had to update a subsidiary bit of software.
Immediately afterwards Sibelius behaves as it did at the start of this thread (i.e throwing the PlogueEngine error at startup.

Anyone else had any problems with Sibelius after an iTunes update?
Haven't had a chance to check this yet - I've got to go to bed -when I get some time I will retry the time machine step mentioned previously and see how long Sibelius lasts if I don't update iTunes.

Any chance of establishing what this update was, more precisely?

There are two possible locations for the Google updater.

It is either in the System Library at:
/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/

or in the User Library at:
~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/

Both these libraries are by default hidden from the user interface of macOS Finder.

However, in the light of doccrispy's latest post, had you run iTunes between the last time that Sibelius worked normally, and the first time that Sibelius went wrong?

It's going to be a while before I can fully test the iTunes theory - lots of choir rehearsals. However, the iTunes update I installed yesterday, before I got the PlogueEngine error once again, looks very much like the one described here: https://macreports.com/software-update-is-required-to-connect-to-your-ios-device-installation-failed-fix/ - Just to be clear, my install of the iTunes update appeared to work without incident - I only enclose the link to illustrate the type of update I experienced.

I am running an old version of MacOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) and have a newish phone (although it's happily synched with iTunes for 9 months or so without requiring the softwarte update).

I hope this is of some use until I can test my hypothesis by resurrecting the last known good time stamp again. I will report back.

Hi Robin!

I use iTunes all the time. I think there was one update recently. I do think that I have used both iTunes and Sib after that, but I'm not sure. The problem started yesterday. I found the Google updater and deleted that and restarted the computer, same thing. No sound. Very annoying. Haven't got a clue how to solve this.

Anyone at Sibelius/Avid that has a solution?

At the time of writing, no solutions to this problem are known, for any version of Sibelius. The problem might not lie within Sibelius at all, but somewhere else in the Mac.

One user had success with reverting to an earlier Time Machine backup, but then the Sibelius problem re-appeared after he used iTunes to connect his phone again.

My test plan will be as follows:
1. Revert to the last known working time machine backup.
2. Check that Sibelius works
3. Avoid using iTunes to sync iPhone for a few days
4. Keep checking that Sibelius is working
5. After a suitable period (3 or 4 days):
a) one final check that Sibelius is working
b) connect iPhone and allow the software update to happen.
c) See whether Sibelius has stopped working.

Are there any useful diagnostics I can run during that process, or does anyone have any other observations?

Take screen-shots of any dialogues about updates that iTunes might throw up.

Possibly have the macOS "Console" open during use of iTunes, to watch for any references to updating.

Possibly have the macOS "Console" open when launching Sibelius, to log any errors in the Sibelius process that might lead to the PlogueEngine pop-up error.

Thanks for everyone's continued efforts. We've been looking at Console logs sent in from those affected, and many of them point to an updated MobileDevice.framework.

Reinstalling an older version of iTunes may work:

https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to reproduce this in-house, so we're waiting to hear if this fixes it. If it does, we'll contact Apple for further investigation.

Hi All,

We've narrowed this down to an update for iTunes. We've raised a bug with Apple and they are looking into this for us.

Until then, the only advice is to sit tight until we hear from Apple. Alternatively you could try updating to macOS 10.13 or later, however this comes with its own risks, of course, so don't attempt this without a full backup of your system and don't do this if you're in the middle of an important project.

Stand by for more info as we have it.

OK I have a working version of sibelius 7.1.3, on a mac running el capitan (10.11.6) and I'm about to see if triggering the iTunes update mentioned above causes the PlogueEngine problem.

Started up iTunes without iphone plugged in - running iTunes version 12.8.2.3
Quit iTunes
Sibelius still starts up an audio works - no error
here's the moment of truth -plugged in iPhone XR
iTunes starts up and get the attached dialog ("A software update is required to connect to [your] phone.")
Following lines appear in system log:
Oct 1 23:11:46 Chriss-iMac MobileDeviceUpdater[861]: tid:70b - unable to query device capabilities
Oct 1 23:11:46 Chriss-iMac MobileDeviceUpdater[861]: Discovered a device. Asking if the device is restorable.
Oct 1 23:11:46 Chriss-iMac MobileDeviceUpdater[861]: MobileDevice reports the device needs an update. Asking the user to update.
Oct 1 23:11:46 Chriss-iMac MobileDeviceUpdater[861]: Board ID 12/ChipID 32800 (named Chris' phone) needs an update

Just for completeness I'm going to say no to update, and quit itunes
As expected sibelius starts up ok with sounds working

ok going to repeat the above plug in of phone but say yes to itunes update.

Update completes after lots of log entries including many incomprehensible warnings and iTunes restarts.
Oct 1 23:28:25 Chriss-iMac MobileDeviceUpdater[934]: We finished the update.

Quit iTunes
And attempt to start sibelius - lo and behold plogueEngine error (see other screen shot) and following in log
Oct 1 23:33:56 Chriss-iMac MIDIServer[1056]: 23:33:56.886 ERROR: 0:
Oct 1 23:34:01 Chriss-iMac Sibelius 7[1054]: Error loading /Applications/Sibelius 7.app/Contents/Resources/PlogueEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/PlogueEngine: dlopen(/Applications/Sibelius 7.app/Contents/Resources/PlogueEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/PlogueEngine, 262): Symbol not found: _xpc_file_transfer_create_with_path
Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice

I think that points the blame fairly squarely at the iTunes updater (I think that update is only for people connecting new phones to older OS versions)

I hope this all helps - gotta reload my timestamp again!

Thanks for the excellent report on your findings. I heard back from Apple overnight and they've been able to reproduce the problem as well. Apple Engineers are looking into it so we'll wait to hear from them.

In the meantime, you may want to consider updating to macOS 10.13 or later (if you can) as we haven't had any reports from anything newer than 10.12.

Sib 8.7.2 on Mac El Capitan 10.11.6

Is there any further news about the PlogueEngine/iTunes dilemma? I'm trying to avoid restoring the earlier OS on Mac I've subscribed to your article

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Error_Message/PlogueEngine-dll-Mac-iTunes

but have heard nothing. I've been in touch with Apple but they are unaware of the issue. Please let me know.

There will be no further news until after Apple have released the fix for the damage that they have done to your macOS. There is no information available about the likely timescale that will take.

This is the information from the Avid Knowledge Base, updated today, 10/23/19:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Error_Message/PlogueEngine-dll-Mac-iTunes/?success=y&isdtp=vw&nonce=&sfdcIFrameOrigin=http%3A%2F%2Favid.force.com

I called Apple and upgraded my OS from Sierra to High Sierra version 10.13.1 and that fixed the problem on my Sibelius playback. That whole issue caused a lot of stress when I discovered my playback didn't work and I had no clue what the problem was.

Just noting that a recent (10/07/2021) iTunes update seems to have caused the problem detailed above on my own machine (MacOS 10.12.6). The update was triggered within the iTunes app, and there doesn't currently appear to be a "device support update" as detailed in the avid.force.com link available for iTunes on the App Store.

I don't think this problem is caused by an iTunes update. I think it is caused by updating an iOS device (iPhone, iPad) to a later version of iOS software than the macOS can cope with, and then connecting that iOS device to the Mac: this results in a change to the macOS which makes it impossible ever to use Sibelius again.

The "Device Support Update" is not an iTunes update: it is a macOS update, and a "Device Support Update" for supported versions of macOS was issued by Apple in late September 2021.

However, your version of macOS, 10.12, is out of Apple support, and so no "Device Support Update" will be made available for 10.12.

The only way you can ever run Sibelius on your Mac again is:
either (a) to revert the Mac to a Time Machine backup dated before you plugged an updated iOS device to the Mac, and thereafter never connect an iOS device to the Mac again;
or (b) to update the macOS to a version that is still entitled to Apple support, so that you can receive the "Device Support Update".

Hi everyone,
I am facing the same problem and I can't update my OS because my Macbook is from 2012 and that would cause a lot of headache (I tried to do it once and it was a nightmare).
I was wondering if anyone found another option to solve this issue besides the Time Machine backup or updating the OS?
Thank you!

Get a cheap windows based PC, no issues with even very early versions of Sibelius on Windows.

If your macbook is from 2012, you will be able to update to High Sierra (and maybe Mojave). I can say that this problem didn’t affect me when running 10.13 and 10.14 on a 2011 macbook pro (and connecting a newer iphone to itunes). But my Sibelius was not so old at the time.

I’m now running Catalina (10,15) on the same computer using a dosdude patch with no problems. But if your macbook is from 2012, High Sierra will be officially supported without any patch or opencore.
