Disappearing titles on parts
Posted by Gordon Thornett - 14 Sep 05:47PM
The latest weird thing to happen om Sibelius... I was completing an orchestration, and the full score looked fine, but when I came to look at the parts, some of them strangely had the title of the piece missing. This seemed to happen mainly with second parts, eg Oboe 2, Bassoon 2, etc., although the organ part, which I had created as a 'new part, in order to add the pedal stave, also lacked a title!

I think the parts were otherwise fine (although they also lacked the copyright mark as on the full score). I had to send them off, with an apology, but am wondering what can have gone wrong. Any ides?

Hi there

The title and copyright are, I suspect, not attached to the first bar of the piece, and the parts in which they are missing start with a multirest. In the score, select the two objects and cut and paste them onto the first bar, and everything should resolve itself.

Hope that helps

It's a very common issue with older (7.5 or earlier) versions. It should not happen with later versions as the new facility for replacing system text at the start of a piece should get ridof one of the reasons. The other reason is just not inserting this text in the first bar.

I think in my case it was just that I didn't know (or had forgotten) about attaching the title text into the first bar. ( I have an up-to-date version of Sibelius!)

It's happening again, but this time it's not the titles of the piece that's missing, it's the name of the part! All the parts are clearly and correctly named in the FS, but the parts, though complete in every other respect, are not named as flute, oboe, etc.
I did have to export the piece to an earlier sib version, in order to work on it on my laptop when I was away from home, but I am back on my iMac now, which has the latest version of the software.

Check if the Full Score (hidden at the top left) is still on the front page. If not you need to put it back (use Instrument name at top left text.) Use the wildcard \$partname\

Sorry, Mike, I really don't understand. I don't see any hidden Full Score, either on the full score or any individual part. I have more than one 'full score' in the title bar, that lists all the instruments. Interestingly when I hover over one of these it sometimes comes up with a part that I have previously deleted (e.g 'bassoon2')
(I've been modifying this orchestral score for a smaller orchestra.)
Any chance you could tell me on a screenshot where to look for this hidden 'Full Score'?

Don't bother investigating. Just do this:
- add a random instrument staff to the score;
- delete the added instrument staff again.

Everything should come right.

Robin's way is probably quicker - but you need to know these things are there (and hidden) so you don't accidentally delete them again!
