hi. I have a keyboard score, 2 staves. The top staff has two 'contrapuntal' parts: one stems up, the other stems down etc. If I have an 8va over the staff, does it apply to both parts? It sounds like the playback treats it that way, but I'm curious what the rule is. I believe I"ve seen scores where the 8va dashed line snakes down around the second part, though that doesn't look good. If the 8va does not apply to the lower part, I guess i could just write 'at pitch'?

Sibelius, for playback, treats an octave line as applying to every note on the staff, regardless of voice.

Do you know what the actual notation rule is though? If a performer were playing it?

This topic is discussed in "Behind Bars" by Elaine Gould, on page 325.

Essentially, she says: don't do it. If you need it, add another staff. If you really must do it for isolated notes, then add a vertical bracket down from the 8va to encompass the notes to which it applies, AND use a loco line for the voice to be played at pitch.
