New text style unresponsive to Design and Position
Posted by Michele Galvagno - 14 Aug 01:25PM
I am trying to create a new Text Style which inherits from the Technique Text Style.
I want it to be equal in all regards safe from its vertical positioning, as I want it below the staff.

The Vertical Positioning tab of this text style (and of all those which inherit from Plain Text) is not accessible nor responsive but, worse, even the Design and Position dialog is not doing what it should.
Setting the vertical positioning at object creation to -5 (or minus whatever) doesn't change the creation place of the text object, which is still above the staff.

Please don't tell me what I should do instead, I know I can make a duplicate of Expression and make it non-italic, please tell me why this doesn't work.
Why is a new text style based on Technique unresponsive to Design and Position settings?

Thank you

Changes made to a Text Style in "Design and Position" do not affect existing text objects of that style until "Reset Position" is performed on them.

Otherwise, please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the issue, so that we can figure out what is causing the issue.

I am aware of the "Reset Position" behaviour, I had already tried it.
I would have not written here.

Please find the score with instructions attached below.

The text is behaving exactly as you have defined it in "Design and Position".

"String number" was defined to be "-8" spaces "Below bottom of staff", which is equivalent to "+8" spaces "Above bottom of staff", so that is where Sibelius places it.

What Robin is pointing out is that you need to change the sign of the position to +8 spaces below.

That would be too far below. About 4 or 5 below would probably be what was intended.

I had reported this because this morning I was having a "from top of staff" and "-8" not behaving properly, of that I am 100% sure.
Now, this is not reproducible anymore, which is fine and thank you for explaining the behaviour.

Just one thing: thinking that a non-mathematician user would understand as a snap that the minus sign needs to be inverted is pure Sci-Fi... now I get it but, in a common person's mind "5 points below the bottom of staff" would still instinctively translate to "Oh yet, let's type minus 5 there..."

Fortunately, musicians are generally uncommon people!
