Display Underlying Instrument for a staff
Posted by Alain Zagar - 13 Aug 03:41AM
Hi - I'm adjusting my scores in order to use the Synchron Sound libraries from VSL. I need to be able to see at a glance what staves are not using the proper base instrument type. At the present time, I can clearly see the instrument name but I want to be able to know what the original instrument was for that staff.

For instance, I may have originally created an instrument using

"Violin 1 (ensemble) [VSL Special Edition]"

The name displayed on the score would be simply - "Violin 1" assuming I didn't modify that.

How can I tell that it was created using

"[VSL Special Edition] vs [VSL Synchron Strings]"

as an example?

Look in the mixer. Hover over the instrument name in the channel and a pop up will show what instrument is used on each staff.

Or select the staff. Goto Home/Instruments/Edit/InstrumentsInFamily. The The current instrument using that staff will be highlighted in the list.

Staves are not created with "Instruments". Staves are created with a "Preferred SoundID": the instrument name shown in the left margin is irrelevant to this process.

The allocation of sample library sounds to staves is not done until playback time, when the preferred SoundID of each stave is used as a search key to find the best match SoundID in the SoundSet file being used for the sample library. The SoundSet file serves as a mapping between SoundIDs and sample patches in the sample library.

The situation is complicated by certain third-party sample library vendors providing score templates for use when creating scores intended to play with their libraries. Those templates are seeded with instrument definitions that use special bespoke SoundIDs that match the SoundIDs in their own provided SoundSet for their library.

If the user then wants to change the sample library for playing back a score, there might or might not be difficulties getting matches between the bespoke SoundIDs embedded in the score for the old sample library, and the different bespoke SoundIDs in the SoundSet for the new sample library. It all depends on the details, which we do not have here.

You should use the process documented by VSL for adapting an existing score to play with their new library. It probably involves importing a House Style with new instrument definitions.

Thank you for your reply.

I have been following the VSL process with somewhat mixed results and that's how I ended up with wanting to try to update each staff with the VSL version, importing the custom house style and the specific SoundSet etc. I suspect that Sibelius is getting confused with some staves using the VSL SoundID and others using the standard SoundIDs. I've tried to explicitly define the preferred SoundID for each instrument and the automatic allocation seems to ignore those.

As you stated, those steps should have added the custom definitions to enable support for all the various key-switched and CC controlled features of the new library.

I'm starting to suspect that the Synchron Strings SoundSet and the new house style have some issues.

It looks like it's back to basics with some old fashion trouble-shooting.

Thanks again.

Thanks -

I hadn't noticed that previously or more likely I just got used to ignoring the pop-up.
