Displaced notation elements
Posted by Rob M. - 25 Jun 01:12AM
Earlier this year, Sibelius began displaying a score with many of the notation elements slightly displaced on the staff. Most are 0.25 spaces below where they should have been on the staff. Stems are displaced laterally from the note-heads by a similar amount. This makes accurate proof-reading quite difficult.

A PDF export does not display this aberration. It seems to affect all .sib files I have, regardless of the versionof Sibelius in which they were created. I've been running Sibelius Ultimate on Windows 10 Home version 1809. An upgrade to v1903 is on the horizon but hasn't happened yet.

I had been using Sib 18.11 for a couple of months when this anomaly first appeared; updating to v19.4 made no difference. How do I correct this anomaly?

What else changed in your Windows installation at the time the anomaly first appeared?

When did you last update the video drivers?

To answer your questions, Robin Walker:
- I'm not aware of any changes in my Windows installation. Doesn't mean there weren't any; any such changes could have taken place up to a couple of weeks (or maybe more) before I noticed the anomaly because I wasn't using Sibelius frequently at the time.
- I'll check the video drivers, and update them if they're not current.

One other factoid that probably bears on this issue: I've just noticed that if the zoom level goes to 200% or above, the anomaly disappears entirely.

I've checked my video drivers. Seems they're current and don't want to be updated. My video hardware is AMD Radeon HD7660D.

You list many versions of Sibelius in your signature. In which of those version numbers does this displacement become apparent?

When the displacement is apparent, what staff size is configured in the score?

I can remember one other user reporting a similar issue within the last year, but I cannot now find the relevant thread on this forum.

The list is of the versions of Sibelius I have used. Sibelius Ultimate 19.4 is the only version I currently have installed. Files produced in earlier versions did display the anomaly.

The anomaly appeared in all files I checked. Staff size varies in those files between about 5.0mm and 6.0mm.

Thanks for looking. I also searched for other reports but came up dry. The search engine in this forum isn't terribly helpful.

An update: Last week, I was messing about with the Windows ClearType Text Tuner. I didn't make any huge changes, but I did achieve minor improvements in the display of screen fonts. A few days later, I was in Sibelius and noticed that the anomaly had disappeared. Was the disappearance related to the ClearType Text Tuner adjustment I had made? I've no idea, but it does seem possible. Other things are also possible, such as a Windows update that snuck itself in overnight somewhere. There have been a bunch of those lately. I should point out that I don't use Sibelius on a daily basis, so I can't say exactly when the issue cured itself.
