WHERE is the Device ID on a Mac?
Posted by Richard Vitale - 23 Jun 08:05PM (edited 23 Jun 08:47PM)
I helped a friend today download Sibelius Untimate from her AVID Master Page today starting around 2:15. She also has a one yr subscription as of today.

It's close to 4pm now and this has been a total mind-f@#k (my friend description) and I'm REALLY good with computer stuff.

The download from her AVID page is Sibelius and NOT Sibelius Ultimate as it is a bare program missing everything we need.

A 1/2 hour search and trying different methods brought me to this page from 2005:
https://community.avid.com/forums/p/104206/849814.aspx
saying that:
"The device ID or Machione ID is different depending on your platform.

On a mac - you go to the Apple menu and select "about this Mac" and you will see the machine ID listed."

This is incorrect information above.

(One fellow says he found the "Device ID" and then proceeds to NOT tell where and how he found it.)
---------
WHY, on this page:
http://www.avid.com/license
does it not say that the System and Activation ID can be found on the Master AVID Account page under "Products" and then tell customers EXACTLY where and how to find the Device ID?

System ID is top-left
Activation ID go to: "Product Details and Download Links->Show" and scroll down.
Device ID-> ?????

I'm sure time and time again people are calling Sibelius Help Line by phone or googling for the answers...if I am!
---------
My friend's AVID application (on her desktop, not online on a browser) says that Sibelius Ultimate is "activated".

Sooo...either the download link is incorrect or Sibelius is making it extremely difficult for people to upgrade from the downloadable Sib app (or trial app) to Ultimate where normally you simply type in a SN given to you after purchase while the app is active and forefront.

Any answers would be appreciated but I'll most likely end up calling Sib Help on the phone on a weekday.

Grrrr!
-----------
1) Where is the Device ID on a Mac?
2) If I insert the Device ID this along with System and Activation ID online will that CHANGE (activate) the Sib app to Sib Ultimate or is it a separate download for Sib Ultimate?

The "Device ID" is a Sibelius invention and is not part of the operating system. Most of the time, you do not need to know the Device ID. On the rare occasions that you need to know it (such as activating via a second computer), then you are told the Device ID explicitly. Otherwise, it is an entirely internal thing that you do not need to know.

So, why do you need the Device ID?

The downloaded Sibelius application is the same for "Sibelius" as it is for "Sibelius Ultimate". It is the ActivationID that determines whether the Sibelius application behaves as "Sibelius" or as "Sibelius Ultimate".

Thx Robin, the above is what Sam told me.

Now, this is directed at Sam, or whatever Gods scour this site, and not you as I am familiar with your work and if anyone can answer my questions without a back and forth on the phone...it would be you.

I went downstairs to login to my friend's apartment and then to this site and I should SIMPLY have to SIGN IN!!! To sign in on another computer (1st x only I'm guessing) it requires a system or activation ID besides your email and password. I tried both and NEITHER worked!

So, I'm back in my apartment typing and I sent screenshots from my friend's computer to mine instead of vice versa so I can send from here.

(It should be easy to log in and out of ANY computer for a Help Site using email and password like any other important website I use.)

ALSO, I told Sam to explain to new customers that a "Perpetual License" is a synonym for an "application" so people don't order a Perpetual License AND subscription unless that's what they want.
-----
Here is a screenshot of my friend's Avid Link app saying Sib Ultimate is activated for Auto-renew, but that is for payment.

It doesn't look like my Application Manager and there is no "licensing" tab. Perhaps that's the issue?

Also, screenshots of the "About Sib" and "Pref" windows for Marty which are definitely NOT Sib Ultimate.
(My "About" window reads "Sibelius Untimate", her's "Sibelius".
My Preferences window is full, her's nearly empty.)

How do I get her app to look like Sib Ultimate???

Avid Link has never had a "Licensing" tab.

If you are still using Avid Application Manager, you should be aware that that product is obsolete, and is no longer being updated (its bugs are left unfixed), and it has been replaced by Avid Link: which you can download from your My Avid account.

Your friend seems to have purchased both Sibelius and Sibelius Ultimate. This seems to have confused Avid Link.

A "perpetual license" is NOT an application.

That has already been sorted out at AVID, The Sibelius purchase was refunded and cancelled. I was told AFTER the purchase that is was analogous to the old Sibelius First. (Looking at past posts, I see you told me that Robin, thx.)

I told Sam that if he talked about this product online as "Sibelius (formerly Sibelius First)" it would solve a lot of heartache.

I will have them explain to me over the phone what a "perpetual license" is as I'm growing tired of this :-)

I will also ask them to "unconfuse" the link or send me a direct link.

I spoke with Lorenzo from support today and he had me sign out of Avid Link and delete files/folder in the Mac Library so everything is copacetic now. Sibelius Ultimate is working!

I asked him about the perpetual license and and the "Buy it once and own it forever" idea.

He said you'd own it forever but without a subscription as your OS's progress eventually it wouldn't work and confirmed that having the perpetual license and subscription was redundant.

I said: It sounds like purchasing a perpetual license is like buying the application, it'll work only until it is outdated by your operating system and he said, "Yes, that is correct".
