Chord symbols when imported from Pro Tools don't follow engraving rules
Posted by helenvee - 21 May 08:16PM
I have a pro tools (PT 2018.7) session in which I've entered chord symbols on the chord symbol ruler. I opened the score editor, then clicked file/export/sibelius. Then I opened this sibelius file. The chord symbols are above the stave, with both the letter for the chord and a fingering diagram. I would like it to show only the letter for the chord, no diagram. However, when I go to engraving rules/chord symbols and set this setting, it doesn't affect these chord symbols. If I enter new chord symbols from scratch, these are affected by the engraving rules. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It would help to see a bit of the score that shows the problem. I am guessing the the Protools symbols are not "Chord Symbol Objects" which contain both the text and the chord diagram within. Click on the text chord name and look in the status bar and if it says "Editing Chord Symbol" it should work.

Anything is possible though. If you can provide a link to a score that shows the problem it would be much easier to diagnose.

Well I agree with you that the Engraving Rules do not work on these chord symbols.There must be something weird in the translation. The only thing I found that worked was to right click a chord symbol, and then in the menu drop the Chord Symbol submenu and click on Add/Delete Chord Diagram.

This is tedious and only works on one symbol at a time. But if you go to File Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts and set a shortcut as shown in the screenshot.

Now select the entire score and use Home Filter Chord Symbols to filter the chords, then type your shortcut - you may need to run it twice to remove all the diagrams.

This should get rid of the diagrams , but the Engraving Rules still do not work. If this were my score I might consider exporting as MusicXML and then importing that and see if it fixes the problem without introducing more problems. Good luck!

You need to:
- select the chord symbols;
- do "Reset Design"
to get them to obey the Engraving Rules.

Wow - thanks for figuring that out Robin. I should have tried it but I was looking elsewhere. I wonder what in the "design" got messed up, but it is good that the reset worked.

Actually, Bob's method works en masse too, if you filter chord symbols, then R-klik for the chord symbol menu.

My method gets rid of the chord diagrams, but the Engraving Rules still do not work. Reset Design fixes the immediate problem and also makes the chord symbols behave correctly, which is a better solution.
