Sib. 8.x: Find and replace instances of specific text styles
Posted by odavis - 16 May 02:00AM (edited 16 May 02:01AM)
Is there a way to find all instances of a specific text style in a document? Received a file with two text styles of same name, the only difference being font used, and I want to consolidate all if possible to one text style, deleting the other. First, I need to find all instances in which the first text style of the two occurs, but the document is HUGE, and it would take me days and days and days. Is there a way to find not text but text style in a document? I need to make sure that if I do this, though, I see each instance before changing to make sure I don't completely mess things up!

Thanks, all!

I did not think it was possible to have more than 1 text style with the same name, but it is (Symbols have the same problem). Internally they have different style id values (see first screen shot) but in many cases in Sibelius code the external name is used to identify the style.

There is nothing easily available to differentiate between the 2 styles (though one could write a plugin to do it), and you can't just delete one of the 2 same-named styles. But what you can do is go to Edit Text Styles and edit the name of one of the styles. You would want to rename a style that is user-defined, not built-in. (the delete button will be grayed out for built in styles).

So in my example, I had 2 styles named Comment. (see 1st screenshot). I went to Text Styles Edit Text Styles and found the Comment styles, and picked the one that was user-defined, and called it something not already used and easy to find (Comment XXXX).

(the forum was unhappy about something in my message so I split it)

Now I can use the Advanced Filter to select all text with style Comment XXXX, and then go to the Text pane, and pick a replacement text style for Comment XXXX, in my case Comment, and then it should be done.

If you want to browse through the text with CommentXXXX to check them out, you could filter the style in Advanced Filter, then install and run the Browse Selected Objects plugin to look at them one at a time.

I would think that would work.

Thanks for your reply, Bob! This helps, and sounds like it will do the trick. I'll give it a try.
