Sib. 2018.x: Ornament in JS Bach BWV 530 Lento
Posted by graham - 02 Dec 02:42AM
Any body got a suggestion for realising this ornament see pix attached. This is a modern equivalent - urtext is a shorter wiggle with a snake like stroke to the note of the first complete bar.

This ornament appears in the first 2 bars of Lento -BWV 530 organ trio sonata JS Bach

thanks.

The only ornament I come across these days is called a "flip". I could only guess at the Bach thing. Judging by its shape.....

It's called a "Scheiffer" - which roughly means a "slide".

See the attachment for how Bach actually wrote it.

The basic feature is two grace notes ascending to the written note. In slow tempo you could add another pair of grace notes i.e. E F# E F# G (and make the beat a bit longer than strict time) if you really really want to. Whatever you play, the grace notes always start ON the beat not before it.

The "wiggle" at the start of the ornament isn't the same as the sign for a short trill. It's the equivalent of the "custos" sign that was used earlier (16th century) at the end of a system to show the pitch of the first note on the next system - i.e. it just shows the pitch of the first ornamental note.

(Note: sharp eyes might notice the example wasn't made in Sibelius - but hopefully Avid's don't-mention-the-D-word police force won't delete it!)

Thanks both - I might be able to make something that resembles that. Am familiar with custos also doing some transcribing of
C16 duos.

What you need is a font compatible with the SMuFL standard

https://www.smufl.org/version/latest/range/otherBaroqueOrnaments/
and 57 more varieties if you need them... https://www.smufl.org/version/latest/range/precomposedTrillsAndMordents/
