Sib. 2018.x: Transposing Horn
Posted by Leif Colding - 27 Nov 08:39PM
I have part, Horn in E, to be entered in Sibelius for transposing to Horn In F.
I have "Horn in E Nokey", but it would be an advantige to enter it in "Horn in E" with a possibility to use keys.
In "Edit instruments" I could not find a possibility to create "Horn in E".
Where and how?
Regards
Leif Colding

I trust the Horn in E is from a historical composition - no-one writes contemporary music for horn in any key other than F.

You do sometimes get horn in Eb still.

Ah - for a horn-player who doesn't like to transpose.

I had an amateur (horn-playing) colleague who was completely fazed by Rachmaninov's Symphony No 2, much of which (or all? - I can't recall) is for horns in E. He asked me to produce a part in F for him, which I did.

("You just press a button on the computer, right?") - Er, not quite, no.

==============================

Depends what kind of horn. Brass band tenor saxhorn is in Eb. Mellophones & mellophoniums have interchangeable crooks in F & Eb. All very different from French horn in F or F/Bb.

A (french) horn player nowadays doesn't expect to see a part in Eb.

Wikipedia says that the mellophone has the same fingering as the french horn. Simply not true. Altho' the written notes produce the same pitch, the french horn tube in F is twice as long as that of the mellophone, and plays an octave higher in the harmonic series to produce the same pitches.

If you've found a 'Horn in E' part with a key signature, are you sure it isn't actually a 'Horn in Eb'? This brass band instrument is fully chromatic and uses key signatures, unlike the historic 'Horn in E'.

I have finished the "E-horn" project having created the "new" instrument.
In my installation the "new" instrument does not go into Sibelius progrmme, only the file/score I worked on.
All ok. Thanks for help.

But if you need a horn in E with key sig for further use, you could create a new instrument using horn in F as a starting point, simply changing the transposition in transposed part to "middle C sounds E in octave 3".

Easier to use the existing horn in e (no key) and click the tickbox.

Not usually, but there are some Dutch players (in Fanfares) who play F Horns but can only read Eb parts. Don't ask!!
