Sibelius Update Policy
Posted by Yuzhou - 13 Aug 07:56PM
I purchased a permanent Sibelius license in late 2016. Now I have found out that the only means to update is a new 1 year support plan for 270 Euros. To me that is not a fair deal, in fact, it is more expensive than a one year subscription. I understand software companies prefer a rental model but if updates are priced at almost half the price of the permanent license this is not fair at all.

During the one year I had a support plan the technical support did not really help when I had an issues, in fact it was Robin Walker and this forum that provided help.

Also the contact policy is so restrictive. I was promised an extension of my support plan in the past because one technical issue I had was expected to be resolved in a release that would be after my plan's expiration. Now I do not even know how to contact the Avid people about their promise, I guess I could purchase an access code for 26 Euros.

What do you feel about this or is it just me?

Presumably this is because you let your support plan expire, so that now a new one is required?

It would have been cheaper for you to have kept your support plan renewed on an annual basis.

You probably HAVE contacted 'the Avid people' by posting here, though some details of your actual issue would be useful! They watch this forum.

Did you not understand the new pricing model when it was introduced? In fact, it's relaxed a bit. The original idea was that once you'd 'stepped off the train' the only way back on was a full-price new purchase, or to rent.

My original support plan with my permanent license purchase was 80 Euros. Why is it now 270?

No, I had not heard of a new pricing model since I had purchased my permanent license already. Why is there a penalty to as you say "get back on the train"?

Presumably because you allowed the original support plan to expire. Did you do that? When did it expire?

Distinguish carefully between (a) a "license" (which allows you to run Sibelius), which in your case is perpetual, and (b) a "support plan", which is renewable annually for, as you say, 80 euros.

If you renew the support plan regularly, it costs 80 euros per year. If you omit to renew it, and it expires, then the cost of purchasing a new support plan is 280 euros, plus 80 euros per year afterwards.

For right or for wrong, the policy is now to require users to commit to buying continuous support/updates, or forfiet upgrade privileges. 'Support' is a bit of a red herring. Advice and help is quite freely available.
