Sibelius 2018.5 — Ossia problems
Posted by Maxwell Kaye - 20 Jun 08:53PM
Hello,
I'm using an ossia stave in an orchestral score, and I've noticed that the break between staves remains indefinitely after the ossia, including with the barlines — the ossia itself seems to remain, just not visibly. Is there a way for me to "cut off" the ossia in a way so that the score will look normal afterwards?
Thanks for any help.

The space will remain until the next system break

It's remaining even after the next system break, for the rest of the score...

OK. Have you tried Layout/StaffSpacing/ResetSpaceAbove?

I can't seem to replicate this problem (on v6.2). Something weird may have happened. How was the ossia created?

Adrian's advice should correct the staff spacing. But there's also a problem with the barlines not connecting vln.2 and vla after the ossia.

Maxwell, try this - choose any barline after the ossia, then click precisely where the barline stops at the lower edge of the vln.2 staff, then drag it downwards into the vla staff.

Well spotted, Hawkeye. I don't think this is a regular ossia. Ossias normally have independent barlines, and section barlines should rejoin at the next system break. There might be another hidden staff in there somewhere. Maxwell, could you post the actual sib score. Also, goto Home/Instruments/AddRemove and check how many viola staves there are. If that shown is the only ossia, there should be only two (a & b).

Hi there

It looks as if the ossia stave is still 'showing' after the ossia music finishes.

After your ossia finishes, there is an instrument change, to an instrument misleadingly called 'No instrument (hidden)'. This presents as a stave with no stave lines which doesn't show bar rests or bar lines. But it isn't 'hidden' in the sense normally used in Sibelius for staves, and so its presence in the score is breaking the systemic barlines.

You need to select all the relevant bars on the invisible stave: I recommend using command-drag (ctrl-drag on Windows) to select a small part of the invisible ossia stave, somewhere on the first system where it appears, and then use Home > Select > Bars and choose the option to select to the end of the score.

Now invoke Layout > Hide Empty Staves, and it should properly disappear from the score.

Hope that helps. If not, perhaps post the actual score here, and a solution will be forthcoming.

Jeremy

"After your ossia finishes, there is an instrument change, to an instrument misleadingly called 'No instrument (hidden)'. "

And that, of course, is what an Ossia stave IS. A new stave, allocated to 'No instrument (hidden)' except for the visible portion. Normally, the Create Ossia function also applies Hide Empty Staves to that stave. In this case, it seems to have been defeated. Possibly by a global Show Empty Staves that inadvertently included the ossia stave?
