Remove barline and TS
Posted by Zivkovic - 22 May 07:27PM
In an ensemble score, I want to remove the barline and time signature only for one instrument.
I have managed to remove the barline by creating an instrument with no barline. How can I do with the time signature?

Using the Inspector, one can hide the clef and key signature for a bar, but I don't know any easy way to hide the time signature for just one staff.

You could, I suppose, hide the TS in all staves, and then create a text copy of the TS using a staff, not system text style,(not Time Signature text style, but with the same font and size), and hand copy or multicopy the text into the staves where you want the time signature to appear.

Thank you for workaround. It is more complicated that I expected...

I think it is something Avid should consider in the next updates. That is a quite common task in the music notation (independent TS).

Hi there

There is a better solution here. Sibelius allows creation of instruments that don't draw barlines or time signatures. You can then change to this instrument wherever you need it.

First create a new instrument based on the existing one by selecting a bar and choosing Home > Edit Instruments, then click 'New Instrument…' Click 'Yes' to the warning dialog.

• In the dialog box which opens, change the 'Name in dialogs' to be descriptive (eg 'Flute no time sig or barlines'), so you can find it later. It's also useful to insert a tilde (~) before the 'Instrument change name' so the changes won't show in your score.

• Click 'Edit Staff Type…' and tick the box at bottom left 'Used for Ossias'. (This causes the time signatures not to be drawn).

• Untick the box for 'Barlines' (which will stop them from drawing).

and then OK out of all dialogs.

Now change to the new instrument wherever you need remove barlines/time signatures. (Make sure, when you're first searching for the new instrument, that 'All instruments' is chosen in the Instrument Change dialog box, as it will not show up if 'Common instruments' is chosen.)

If you make a passage selection before inserting the instrument change, Sibelius will also restore the original instrument at the end of the selection, which is generally what is wanted. If you need to adjust the position, turn on View > HIdden Objects.

Hope that helps

Wow, cool, Jeremy. It never would have occurred to me to use "for ossia" as a way to eliminate time signatures.

I learn something new every day!
