V7.5 vs V8.4 Sibelius Comparison
Posted by DanClark - 01 May 08:41PM (edited 01 May 10:04PM)
Hi. It's been a while since I've used Sibelius, but am thinking of using it again. I own 7.5.1 and am considering upgrading to V8.4. I don't have a Windows tablet PC, which is supposed to be a big feature for Sibelius 8.x So...

Is there any reason for me to upgrade from 7.5.1 to 8.x? Would I lose features if I upgraded to 8.x Sibelius standard (not Ultimate)? Can someone point me to a 7.5.1 vs 8.x review?

Thanks,

Dan.

Sorry, what do you mean "Sibelius standard"? There is no "Sibelius standard". You can review the comparison charts of all (newly renamed) versions of Sibelius here:

http://www.avidblogs.com/sibelius-2018-4/

For upgrade options, please see the "Sibelius 1-7.5" option:

See here:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/User_Guide/Sibelius-8-Documentation-All

and more specifically, here are all the changes in Sibelius 8:

http://akmedia.digidesign.com/support/docs/Whats_New_in_Sibelius_8.6_97331.pdf

There's a chapter for each release in Sibelius, looking at the index you get a 'big picture' overview.

I have Sibelius installed on several PCs and a Windows 10 tablet (Surface Pro), I'd have to say that nothing beats a laptop or desktop with one or two large sized monitors. Especially if you have larger orchestral scores there's nothing like having a large screen to look at, even at 1080p resolution.

Here is the initial review of Sibelius 8 from 2015, but at the top of the post is a link to a review of every update, large and small, since that time.

Ingrid, Peter, Philip,

Thanks for the feedback and the links.

Regarding my workstation environment, I use a workstation (not a laptop) with two monitors - one 27" running at 2760 X 1440 and one 24" running at 1900 X 1200. So tablet enhancements aren't being considered.

Regarding "Sibelius Standard", I was referring to the "Sibelius" product (versus "Sibelius | Ultimate"). Sorry for the confusion. Given that the "Sibelius 1-7.5" (Sibelius | Ultimate upgrade) price is almost four times as expensive as the upgrade to "Sibelius 8" (link below), I'm more inclined to buy the "Sibelius 8" upgrade. However...

Since it appears that Sibelius 8 (not Ultimate) is a more limited version, I'm trying to figure out if upgrading to "Sibelius 8" would give me LESS functionality than Sibelius 7.5.1 (which I already own). However, the reviews in the links appear to compare 7.5.1 to Sibilius 8| Ultimate and not Sibilius 8. I think I'll have to interpolate the reviews with the Sibilius 8 comparison chart. And probably download a trial version of Sibilius 8.

Question for Ingrid: Is the 30 day trial in this link for Sibelius 8 or Sibilius 8 | Ultimate? https://connect.avid.com/Sibelius-Trial-Registration.html

Thanks and regards,

Dan.

The product now (with effect from v2018.4) called "Sibelius" is what used to be called "Sibelius First". It would be a huge downgrade from the full version of Sibelius 7.5. I'm pretty sure that you do not want it.

Also, you should be clear that Sibelius 8.x is no longer available, and, if you upgrade or purchase, you will always receive the latest version of Sibelius (or Sibelius Ultimate) which is, at the time of writing, version 2018.4.1.

To those who think the recent name changes (Sibelius 8 -> Sibelius 2018 ->Sibelius Ultimate) have not caused confusion:

Patrick,

I didn't want to bring in the "Sibelius 2018" thing because it just adds to the confusion. Sometimes marketing folks tend to focus on marketing stuff like market segmentation and positioning, profitability for each segment, and marketing penetration. Unfortunately they forget that the end-results of all of that marketing confuses the unwashed masses (aka customers) like me.

Regards,

Dan.

p.s. The driving force behind this thread is that I'm having some issues with with a Dorico Music XML import. (Yes, I own Dorico too.) So I'm trying to determine if I should stick with Dorico, go back to Sibelius 7.5.1, or upgrade to some version of Sibelius 8.

Given the confusion and if I can't download a trial version of Sibelius (NOT ultimate), then I'll just stay with Dorico and maybe Sibelius 7.5.1.

Robin,

Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding "Sibelius.x", that's just a short hand way of referring to the current version. I.e. I think we're on the same page.

Regarding "Sibelius" = old "Sibelius First", this is a bit confusing. In the comparison page (see link below), it shows the comparison between "Sibelius | First", "Sibelius", and "Sibelius | Ultimate". Therefore, if the current "Sibelius" is the same as the old "Sibelius First", then what is the current Sibelius | First?

Thanks,

Dan.

The new "Sibelius | First" does not exist yet. It will be a free product, to be released around June time.
