Dialogue Boxes + Accessibility Settings: Edit Staff Type Dialogue Box Way Too Large/Not Resizable
Posted by Kiyren - 20 Apr 08:19PM
Hi all,

Sorry for so many questions all at once. I'm having some trouble adjusting to Sibelius 8 from 6. The biggest issue I've run into is that the "Edit Staff Type" dialogue box under Edit Instrument is gigantic and not actually re-sizable vertically (I get the little arrow keys but dragging them does nothing). I'm not sure why there's so much white space around the staff, but this means I cannot select sounds, rendering the dialogue box almost completely useless.

I looked into this problem and for most other people the issue was their screen resolution. I'm fairly certain for me, this is happening due to the accessibility settings on my computer, so let me back up and explain my setup:

Windows 8.1
Resolution 1920 x 1080

and under Display Settings I have things set to 200% because I am extremely visually impaired and this enables me to use the machine without squinting/leaning forward.

The latter is probably what is making Sibelius freak out. The problem is that I can't change the accessibility settings for a single program, apparently (according to the Microsoft support forum), and I need those settings to use this machine.

If I disable them to use Sibelius, then it takes a really long time to reconfigure them again when I want to use a program (because apparently Windows Display settings don't have a way to switch things off without resetting everything), not to mention I then wouldn't be able to use any other program while running Sibelius.

Last time I tried to ask about a problem like this I had in Sibelius 6, everyone just told me "get a bigger screen"...I already have a very large monitor...

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be extremely grateful. It's frankly more than a little frustrating not being able to use this program properly because of a disability. Why can't this dialogue box just have a scroll bar on the side...

The problem is that you have set the display DPI scaling to 200%, giving you a screen which is effectively only 540 pixels high (1080 divided by 2), which is far too small for Sibelius dialogues.

You *do* need a larger screen (i.e. more pixels, not physical size) if you are going to set 200% scaling.

That makes sense, but how can I fix that? If I increase the resolution to compensate, that would basically nullify the accessibility settings, making the program practically unusable for me. How can I keep things large and readable and also actually usable?

I do not know of any way you can do that. Sibelius needs more pixels on the screen than 540.

The DPI scaling is not (I think) intended to be an accessibility feature: it was introduced to enable Windows to scale screen information to match the DPI of the display in the cases where the physical display DPI was other than the legacy value of 96 DPI.

It sounds as if your needs would better be met by leaving the DPI scaling at its default recommended value for your display, and then using the Screen Magnifier to zoom in on the parts of the screen that you need to study. The Screen Magnifier is activated by Windows-plus and Windows-minus.
