Layout changes for printing
Posted by violasrsupreme - 08 Mar 10:12PM
I just got Sibelius a few days ago, and am in somewhat of a time crunch to get some parts changed to another instrument. So I’ve been bumbling around. So far, I’ve gotten the part scanned in, changed clef and key to the new instrument, made all the corrections on the scan, and am ready to print. The first two parts I did printed out fine, but my third one got all changed around in the “print” window......it went from 2 pages to 4, and did crazy things like making one measure (a multi-measure rest) occupy an entire line. How can I get it to print out exactly like it is shown on the “working” pages ? I have the “2018” version.

I might add that I exported the problem part and printed it as a PDF, and it printed exactly the way I wanted it. However, it does not have that “clear and sharp” look of the pieces I printed directly from the program. It is certainly useable, but I prefer the “factory” look.

There are a lot of things that can cause this mismatch. It would be much easier if we could see the sib file concerned.

Here are the examples. I had printed some other parts a few days previously, and did not have this problem; they printed out exactly as they had appeared on the work page. Nothing was changed in the computer between then and now. I might add, I had to do a LOT of editing on this piece; including deleting and adding some bars. The "Print PDF" is the one I exported to PDF and then printed. This is how it showed up on my work screen. The "Print Sibelius" was the one I printed directly from the program.

Well, that didn’t work, either. Any suggestions on the uploading?

On this forum, attachments must be (a) less than 1 Mbyte in size, and (b) of types .sib or .png only. JPEGs (.jpg) often do not work as attachments.

If you wish to take screen-shots, use the facilities of your operating system to do so: do not use a camera. On Windows, use "Snipping Tool". On macOS, use the keyboard short-cuts for screen-shots.

I would prefer to see the actual score, if possible.

OK, "Capture" is the very bottom of the page of the original piece. "Capture1" (attached to next message) is the very bottom of the printed part.

The original shows up to number (bar) 60 on the first page. The printed part has only up to number 40, and I don't like the 4 bar multi-rest taking up an entire line. What to do? It tried printing with "uniform layout", 6 bars per line, and it looks better. That puts it at 3 pages, instead of the original 2 pages that showed on the workspace. However, when I moved to "print" screen, it was formatted the same way as before, with the 4-bar multi-rest occupying an entire line. In this instance, I had used a plug in for the layout (plug-ins/other/make layout uniform).I did check "lock score" when I did this....

Like I said, we need to see the sib file. Otherwise, all we can do is guess.

Do you mean the sib. file of the entire piece? I understand there is a size limit to uploading....that's why I put only a sample in ?

The Sibelius .sib score file itself (rather than pictures of it) should be small enough to attach.

So, I ended up doing "make layout uniform", then PDF'ed it, and printed from there. I needed to get the parts ready to hand out. It looks OK. In addition to "print" on Sib program changing the layout of pages, it also would not reproduce properly my painstakingly entered alternate meters. In the first bar of those sections where I put "4/4+2/4" , the "2/4" was moved entirely out of position.

> In addition to "print" on Sib program changing the layout of pages,

The attached score had only one instrument in it: the Viola. In the Full Score, the Viola staff had a rigidly imposed manual layout with defined system breaks and page breaks.

When I looked at the linked Dynamic Part for the Viola, it appeared that no layout tweaking had been done at all, so I am guessing that when you say Sibelius printing had changed the page layout, what I think you mean to say is you asked Sibelius to print the Dynamic Part, rather than the Full Score, and you had not performed any layout adjustment in the Dynamic Part. Layout of Dynamic Parts is independent of the layout of the Full Score.

I cannot find any instance of such a Time Signature anywhere in the score you attached above.

Re:

Oooooh...my mistake...the alternating meter measures are in another piece, which also did not print properly...I have attached that piece.
Both of these pieces are viola part only. It was originally a tenor sax part that I transcribed for viola (you really don't want to know why), so there was never a "score" involved. Sorry for that misinformation.
I did notice when I went to "print" I needed to select "Print score" to get a pages printed, rather than "print parts", which resulted in only one page of the piece being printed. I did 4 pieces; the other two were a simpler layout and printed in an acceptable manner.

Re:

The issue is the same with the most recent score: the Dynamic Part has not received any attention to its layout to make it ready for printing. In particular, you need to make room for the extended length of the compound Time Signature.

Thanks for that info ! I’ve kinda crashed into the Sibelius program, and haven’t had much time to really study it yet, so I’ve been making notes of specific things I need to look into.
