Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius crashing at 'initialising playback system' stage

Sibelius has suddenly starting crashing during loadup at the 'initialising playback system' stage, and i can't seem to find any way of overcoming this. i've uninstalled and reinstalled twice, and it's still happening!

Has anyone else experienced this - and more importantly, does anyone know how to solve it?!

Re-installing will not fix this issue.

Is this on macOS or on Windows? Which version of operating system? Have you tried shutting down the computer completely, then re-booting afresh?

Are there any error messages associated with this "crash"? If so, what precisely do they say? (or attach screen-shot).

Almost always, a problem at "initialising playback system" stage indicates a problem outside of Sibelius itself, either:
1. a problem with the system device driver for the selected audio output interface; or
2. a buggy VST plug-in which crashes Sibelius.

Sorry for not providing more information. This is on Windows 10; i've rebooted several times and the same problem persists - the loading process fails when it gets to 'initialising playback system' (screenshot attached).

About 2 weeks ago i installed some additional drivers for a concert performance i was giving (in order to connect to some hardware), and wondered if this might have messed things up. But that's all been uninstalled now, so i'm not sure if that can still be the issue.

OK, try this:

- ensure Sibelius is fully quit (not even in the background);
- click Start -> Avid -> Sibelius 7 User Data;
- from the folder that opens, delete the sub-folder "PlogueEngine";
- now try launching Sibelius, and see if starts correctly.

Thanks for this suggestion, Robin. i'd love to say i tried this, and it worked - but shortly after reading this my entire laptop crashed - HARD - and i've had to reinstall everything from scratch. So i guess we'll never know, but i really appreciate your help!

I too have a similar problem. It has only occurred over the last few weeks. If I load Sibelius from a desktop shortcut, the first time I load it it displays the start up screen, plays a few bars of the intro and then shuts down. If I reload the programme all is well. I'm not absolutely sure but I think it started happening after the last Windows 10 update 15/02/2018. It does exactly the same if I try to load Sibelius from a Sib file. Strangely it doesn't do it every time.

I'm on the latest version of Sibelius and of course the latest version of Windows 10

1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options.

- please tell us the brand and model of the sound card to which Sibelius is sending audio output;

- try the procedure given above in my post at "07 Mar 15:07", and report back on any effect, good or bad.

I tried your procedure 07 March 15:07 and I thought that it worked, but when I rebooted my pc I had the same problem.

I think I have attached the screen shots that you asked for but I'm no IT techy so I might not have the correct shots.

As for the sound card I have no idea other than it was the standard one that came in my Dell Inspiron lap top about five years ago.

I can only find a reference to Realtech in my device manager.

the strange thing is that if I reboot Sibelius after a crash it almost always boots clean and I can then proceed with my work.

Sorry me again.

I have just realised that this thread is under the Sib 7.1.3 subject.

I am using Sibelius, which I loosely call Sib 8. I took another look at your procedure and found a folder under Start>Avid>Sibelius User Data and deleted the PlogueEngine folder and it has subsequently not crashed.

I note that it now has a new PlogueEngine folder with todays date.

I should have checked the Sib version but my search was for startup crashes.

Again, apologies for not spotting that earlier.
