Drum sets - playback of open & closed hi hat
Posted by PhilShaw - 05 Mar 06:23AM

Attached is a file with a drum map for the "drum set (Jazz)" drum kit. I'm having trouble with playback of the open/closed hi-hats in bars 10 & 11.

Bar 11 uses the x and diamond (noteheads 1 & 2). That works, but it isn't the normal convention.

Bar 10 uses the more common x with a plus or zero above.
This was shown in the original drum set(jazz) with an x
(notehead 1) and the plus or zero above. I couldn't figure out how to get the plus or zero above. I used the "open" and "closed" plus and zero symbols, but they didn't play back. So I changed the drum set (jazz) in the attached to use note heads 33 and 34, which have the plus and zero above, and they don't playback either.

Anyone know how to get the x on the G line with plus or zero above to play back?

Thanks,

By the way, playback of those noteheads works in the Edit Staff dialogue, but not in a normal staff.

Do not use "Drum set (Jazz)". I do not know of any sample library likely to be available to you which matches the SoundIDs the are pre-defined in the Drum Map for "Drum set (Jazz)". Just use the simplest Drum Set (rock).

That is because in the Dum Map, they are defined with Articulations, while in the score, the noteheads have no articulations applied.

> I couldn't figure out how to get the plus or zero above.

Those articulations are on keypad 4.

> I used the "open" and "closed" plus and zero symbols, but they didn't play back.

Correct: Symbols will not work.

> So I changed the drum set (jazz) in the attached to use note heads 33 and 34, which have the plus and zero above, and they don't playback either.

Don't use those strange noteheads: use the articulations on keypad 4.

The score must match the Drum Map both in notehead and in articulation. At present, the notes in bar 10 have no corresponding definitions in the Drum Map, because the articulations are mismatched.

Also 1, we cannot properly answer questions about playback unless you specify precisely what Playback Configuration you are using.

Also 2, do not use textual words to illustrate the score if they might trigger matching words in the Playback Dictionary. Possible dangers are the words "open" and "closed".

Many thanks. In the attached file I switched to Drum Set (Rock), and to the keypad articulations for plus and zero (I didn't know they were on the keypad). The remaining problem is that the sounds are fine using the noteheads in bar 11, but using the more conventional noteheads (and plus/zero articulations) in bar 10, both notes playback as closed hi-hat. I'm using the playback configuration "General Midi (basic)", i.e. what you get by default when you install Sibelius without Sibelius Sounds.

Any idea how I can get the open hi-hat sound in beat 3 of bar 10, as in beat 3 of bar 11?

Thanks,

Again, playback of the open hi-hit works fine in the Staff Type dialogue of Edit Instrument, but it comes out as closed hi-hat in scores.

The score plays back correctly if you let Sibelius play it back. If you merely click on a note in a score, then none of the written articulations affect the playback. So, in your case, if you click on the notes in bar 10, they play the sound that is associated in the Drum Map with that same notehead with no articulations. In your score, that is a Closed Hi-hat.

OK! That would never have occurred to me! I would have just kept
clicking on the note and trying to figure out what was wrong.

Case closed. Many thanks.
